Loss of our Right to Privacy example

I recently injured my shoulder in a fall. Went to my doctor, had an xray, got a cortisone shot, spent the last few weeks iced down. Have been referred to a specialist to see if I need a MRI. Will need to deal with insurance annual deduction before it is over but all care was as expected.
This morning I took a call from what looked on my phone dial as some Medical Insurance group of sorts. Immediately asked for by name and I responded with "regarding what?". The caller proceeded to provide information I only shared with my physcian and health care providers. Then they tried to sell me pain medication that, I was assured, my physician could provide.
Obviously a phone scam that could only have resulted by my health care providers or insurance company selling information to be used by phone scammers selling useless stuff.

Doctors aren't allowed to share any of your medical information with anyone other than the person you name according to HIPAA laws - and those are very strict. No health care worker - even those who deal professionally with the data - are allowed to share it or it would be a HIPAA violation.
