For the first half hour or so that I was watching (muted), Trump was quoted with asterisks. Then the asterisks were replaced with letters. Was any comment made about that?

(19,834 posts)CNN isn't broadcast so technically they don't have FCC constraints on profanity (which generally allow CBS for instance to only use profanity if it's quoting a news source) but CNN may have internal standards on such things.

(5,269 posts)The have totally wimped out in informing the American people what he really said. ABC TV also never showed or said pussy or bitch when discussing the Access Hollywood tape where he said those words. Americans without cable or internet don't know what he really said. An elderly friend of mine who only watches ABC asked me before election what he said on the tape that was so bad as she couldn't figure it out from ABC TV. I'll give her a call to tell her what he really said today!

If you mask the N-word with n****r or N-word, there is a slight decoding process the mind makes and that removes the raw power of the word, it's sort of like white supremacists using the term Alt-Right. It takes the sting away from their position.
When writing about racism, use the n****r or use N-word, but when quoting a person, spell it out!
I learned that from an English undergraduate degree, in a class taught by a doctor of African-American studies.
