(47,026 posts)They came to this country to give their children a better life, so their children would not starve
and could be educated. Their children, born and raised in the US, contributed a great
deal, in order to show appreciation to a country that had given them a life far better than their
parents could have imagined.
One of those children, my father, was career military, flew USAF combat in three wars,
WWII, Korea and Viet Nam.
His brother, my uncle, was killed during WWII. He was a sailor on the USS Meredith;
on a very dangerous mission to bring petrol to soldiers fighting on Pacific islands.
The Meredith escort ships left the convoy as they deemed the mission too dangerous.
The Meredith sailed on alone, and was viciously attacked by the a large force of
Japanese planes, over 40 of them. It was a fierce battle and most of the ship's
crew were killed. My uncle's body was never recovered. We hope he died instantly and was
not left to die in shark infested waters. We think of him at every family reunion and honor
him with a toast. It is the only time in our family reunions you can hear a pin drop.
A total of seven uncles served in WWII.
My mother was a military nurse during WWII, she took care of seriously
wounded soldiers injured in the Pacific theater of the war.
One of my aunts was also a nurse, never married and worked her whole life
in Catholic charity hospitals, taking care of patients for little pay.
Some of my aunts were nuns, who spent their entire lives educating other people's children.
The grandchildren are mostly in service, helping or science professions. Physicians, nurses,
psychologists, educators, police officers, engineers, scientists. They get up every day, and try to make
the world a better place. They are humble and hardworking, work difficult jobs and don't complain.

(15,031 posts)That's the thing of it: Everyone in this country came from somewhere once considered a lesser land by others already here. Not even England escaped denigration. The decades after the Revolution saw a decided turn against the British Isle: we wanted nothing to do with them! At one point, they returned, chased our First Lady from her home and burnt it. In the smoldering embers of that affront, I'm sure the public attitude held the British in considerably greater contempt than what Trump showed today for those he considers "other" from himself.
But our saving grace, if it can be called that, is a continued growth and acceptance of all who come to share this land. Of course, people can embrace their heritage and feel pride in the place from whence they, or their ancestors came. But how much greater is it, how more mature as a people can we be, than to embrace each other and feel pride in what we -- as a people -- have and will become. Then, we can all proclaim with one voice:
"I am a believer in the Declaration of Independence."

(47,026 posts)You came from Germany, which is now a thriving country and treats its citizens better than the US
treats its citizens.
My grandparents came from countries that at the time were impoverished with little opportunity
and in two of the countries, subjugation from a ruling class. Today all four of the countries my
grandparents came from are modern, advanced, and treat their citizens better than Americans
are treated by their government. I have cousins in those countries and all of them would
be horrified to come to the US.
