And then he begs people to not let the Republican party be defined by its leader's blatant racism.

He knows exactly what Trump is...and he needs to own it.

What an asshat.

"Party of Lincoln" my ass

If Lincoln came back now and saw the Rethugs, he wouldn't be able to stop throwing up.

In 1860 the Republican Party, formed from the defunct Whig party and anti-slavery activists, had only been in existence for a few years, and was what we might consider the more liberal of the two major parties, though by the turn of the 20th century it had become more pro-business and pro-economic growth. The Democrats started out with Jefferson's anti-Federalism and were populist, opposed to a strong federal government, and in favor of states' rights (more like today's GOP). Trump's hero, Andrew Jackson, was a Democrat. After the Civil War they were supported by Southerners who opposed reconstruction. It wasn't until the Depression that the parties really "flipped" - the Democrats became liberal, supporting government action to help the unemployed and create a welfare state. In the meantime the GOP became more pro-business and anti-welfare. Southern Democrats remained opposed to civil rights, and mostly became Republicans after the Civil Rights Act was passed.

Lincoln would not recognize today's GOP. He'd be a Democrat.
