In the primary against Trump, I think Mitt loses, unless the GOP can rally a whole bunch of middle-of-the-road conservatives, who probably identify as independent, by now.

Even in the unlikely event that Republicans dump him in favor of the Mittster, Trump would surely run on an independent ticket, all but guaranteeing a Democratic win.

People who argue otherwise haven't been paying attention enough to Republican voters in this country.

There were 16 other contenders in the GOP primary, experienced governors, senators, congressman etc.

They rejected every single one of them and UNANIMOUSLY picked Trump.

What makes you think they'll pick a conventional GOP politician like Romney? There's clearly no appetite for any mainstream GOP politician, why do you think they keep picking Roy Moore, Donald Trump, Christine O'Donnell, Sharron Angle, Todd Akin etc etc

Most GOP voters would cut their own wrists than vote for a mainstream GOP politician. This is been the case since 2010.

People who are hoping the GOP are going to snap out of Trumpamania and come to their census to pick a guy like Romney are going to be massively disappointed.

GOP voters love what he said about Haiti and African countries. This is what today's Republican party is I'm afraid. Most of his base eat all his racist crap up, a polite pro diversity/immigrant candidate like Flake and Romney have no chance in that batshit crazy field that rewards filthy ugly rhetoric.

And I was utterly offended by him on so many levels. Probably like everyone else here. I was terrified he might win. Of course, I never could have dreamed we'd end up 4 years later with the lunatic we have now in charge. Theoretically, if I were ever forced to decide between Trump and Romney, obviously it would be an absolute no-brainer.

I also have to admit, painfully, that I mocked and scorned Romney when he was asked during the debates (paraphrasing) "what country is the biggest threat to the United States" and he replied "Russia." He was right, I was wrong. Stopped clock, whatever, but I have to admit it.

Under no circumstances would I vote Republican in the next Presidential election, but he (hell, anyone) would be better than this benighted fool we have now. Amazing how relative things can be when you are terrified a guy could win 4 years ago but would crawl over broken glass to replace the current occupant with him now. Crazy world.

Running for President was a vanity-project for him from beginning to end: The Presidency was just a collector's item for a bored rich guy.

You could see it in his eyes. There was no fire. He didn't want to be President.

Let's say Trump is impeached/dead/abducted by aliens/whatever by 2020. The people who might support Romney are already on-board with Pence. Their approach is going to be that Romney had his turn, it's Pence's opportunity next. Besides, that's why Jeebus put Pence on the ticket in the first place, remember?

Personally, I would trade both Trump and Pence for Romney and a ham sandwich so fast it would make your head spin, but they've picked their poison.

a position to realistically challenge if dotard is not impeached and removed. He might however, by being in the senate, be the voice of conscience to those servile members who have forgotten their oath of allegiance. He might actually shame them into doing their jobs. Just a thought.
