As long as it will be off for at least 10 min or so at a time.

2. I find that almost nothing is easy on it

Is it a smartphone?

If so---you have apps constantly running in the background that you can turn off.

Download an app killer for the phone and simply turn off the apps that are running and you don't need.

This helps a tiny bit.

Best thing to do. If you can swap batteries---IE: not an Iphone--- buy extra batteries on ebay along with the charger...and simply switch batteries when one goes dead.

My phone battery lasts until mid evening.

4. Oh hell---then it should last all day.

If you've had it awhile, the battery may be losing its charge and its time for a new one.

the ring tone. So I guess you either need to turn it off completely or put it on the silent, no vibrate setting - some do have that. But you might as well turn it off completely if you are going to do that.

7. Don't let the battery run all the way down before recharging it.

Recharge the evening (over night) if it shows even one bar short. The battery will last longer. Some people plug it in every evening.

It's a chemical thing. The battery will last longer it you keep it topped off, rather than deep cycle it all the time.
Other than that I don't worry about it.

8. I'd heard that too...after years of hearing that it was better to completely drain them first...

....I just turn off all of the unwanted apps (especially the internet and internet-dependent apps) and it lasts me all day and all night...

12. The old rechargeable alkaline batteries acquired a memory of how far they were normally discharged.

And would go dead and need to be charged at that point. So it was best to fully discharged them each time.

The newer Lithium-ion batteries do not have that memory. But they still has a limited number of time they can go through the charge/discharge cycle.

10. Leave it on silence. The power-up cycle uses more battery than the sleep mode.

The same is true with laptops. You'll burn about an hour out of the battery in booting the machine (mostly because of the hard drive in the case of a laptop) while sleep mode is good for 24 hours for the same charge depletion. Cell phones have a very high energy cost to boot, (and without a hard drive) as opposed to suspension. The ringtone takes a good chunk of juice, but vibrate takes far more.
