San Diego taxpayers paid a heavy price for President Donald Trump’s long-promised border wall—and they won't get a dime back.

The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and San Diego Police Department incurred more than $2 million of added costs to patrol the isolated area around eight border wall prototypes that were constructed to test designs for a larger border wall.

Between September and January, the Sheriff’s Office paid out $1.6 million in overtime, environmental consultants and material for construction of a chain link fence around the prototypes, The San Diego Union Tribune reported. The police department spent nearly $1 million in overtime, services and supplies, the publication reported.

Officials from both agencies say they were not providing security for the prototypes, rather securing the area in anticipation of protests that the Department of Homeland Security warned might resemble the weeks-long protest over the Dakota Access Pipeline in 2016 and 2017, the Union Tribune reported. Only one protest occurred, local officials told Newsweek.

1. The border wall to the South (and the South only) is a crazy idea.

I lived in the Alsace-Lorraine in France at one time and visited the bunkers that made the Maginot Line. Hitler simply went through a forest and invaded France in spite of those bunkers and that line.

I also lived fairly near but not as close to the fences (huge things) that surrounded the countries in Eastern Europe. We all know what happened there.

Walls and fences and bunkers -- none of them worked to prevent the inevitability of that scary thing: THE FUTURE.

Oh, and then there is the Chinese wall which worked for a very long time but eventually served mostly an aesthetic purpose -- keeping history alive.

And walls and fences keep people in as we saw in Eastern Europe as well as keep them out.

Ironic that Trump who was assisted in his "win" in 2016 (lost by 3 million popular votes if the truth were known) by the Russians now wants us to wall ourselves in. A very Russian thing to do in my opinion.

Walls are for losers. At least the ones I discuss above were.

Oh, and then there is Hadrian's wall. Worked for a time, but as we know, it too failed in time.
