Actual headline on HuffPo
Football fans were utterly distressed Sunday night as the New England Patriots secured a spot in yet another Super Bowl.
The Patriots scored in the last quarter of the American Football Conference against the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 20-24 win. Jacksonville was leading for the majority of the game, up by three points in the fourth quarter, when Patriots receiver Danny Amendola scored with less than three minutes left in the game.
This marks the eighth Super Bowl appearance for the team since 2000, and while Patriots fans are rejoicing, quite a few football fans are tired of the teams non-stop arrival to the biggest game in the National Football League.
Twitter was overrun with disapproval and despair.

And there's more where that came from!

(24,398 posts)1. They're serial cheaters
2. They get help from the refs
3. Their big play is to throw the ball 30 yards downfield and manufacture a PI call
Not reasons fans hate the Pats
1. Dislike Brady
2. Dislike them winning
3. Wish Brady was on their team instead

(24,398 posts)I could have mentioned how boring the Pats are, but its so obvious that I didnt feel it necessary.

(17,090 posts)I could point out that the Pats come from behind more than anybody in the NFL, and to call them a boring team speaks to the lack of substance and credibility in your argument overall, but why bother?

The average person could probably not name a single player on the Jaguars.

Tom Brady? Sure. But ask that average person to give Gronk's full name.
Brady is pretty much a celebrity that even non-football fans know. (Gronk to a lesser extent)
Jacksonville has no such player.
Having single-player name recognition isn't much better than having zero-player recognition.
Consider that 90% of the people (an irrefutably scienceful figure, honest!) know Brady's name only because they hate him, so I guess it's a matter of "any press is good press."

(16,245 posts)I hate the Patriots almost as much as I hate the Yankees, and for the same reasons. At least in baseball, other teams stand a small chance and the Yankees have not won in a while. But they can still buy all the best players (look at the shady, shady deal for Giancarlo Stanton from the Marlins- Derek Jeter was instrumental).
But the NFL is another story. I am a fan of a team that just got trounced and it fucking hurts. They have been sort of good for a while, or at least not terrible, but never quite good enough. They almost always choke at the most important moments. And this is with different players over many years. The only good part of their losing is that they are likely to be able to retain their best players, which may bode well for the future.
But still, someone needs to do something about the system that enables one team to be so dominant, year after year.

(1,303 posts)It had nothing to do with players taking a knee. I support that. It had to do with the referees handing the Pats a win game after game after game. If you watch a rerun of any game they played this year you will see at least one but usually more bad calls by the refs in key plays to help insure the other team lost. I got so disgusted, I just quit watching all games since the Super Bowl was a forgone win for the Pats and every other team were risking injuries for nothing.

The fans of the rest of the league can look forward to the draft.
