House Republican Whip Steve Scalise told reporters Monday afternoon that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's pledge on the Senate floor to turn to immigration in February -- a key part of ending the government shutdown -- held little weight on the House side.
"There were no commitments made in the House," Scalise said.
"I think we've been very clear that any final solution has to include funding for a wall and we've been working closely with President Trump on that," he added.

(10,017 posts)If he has nothing to sign, after said time, then he effectively kills DACA. Will Trump have ICE round up all of the expired Dreamers and mass deport them as he has threatened?
Or, will Trump pretend to save the Dreamers from his own executive order thus sticking with DACA anyway? Will he try to rebrand the whole thing as Trump saves the good hombres ?
This nonsense never needed to happen. There is no way a dysfunctional GOP lead congress could have permanently fixed the neglected immigration issue in a matter of months. Instead the uncertainty will lead to further instability. Instability created by an (in)stable genius.

(685 posts)and that would be to extend it until they can come up with a solution together.
It would be impossible to deport 800K people, republicans know this as well as democrats. DACA are Americans and most of the country believes that. You always have a few haters, but they can go back to their caves.

(685 posts)deporting them would not be tolerated and he knows it. I don't think it would be possible to deport them even if he could

(68,556 posts)down wasn't going to work in terms of saving Dreamers and would hurt our most important effort... the effort to win election in 18. We get the House and the Senate...we can force Trump to the table...even if we just get the House...it will be significant. In November of 16 the GOP and some so called progressives sent a 'message' to Democrats and elected Republicans. We are lucky we have fared this well so far...and if we don't get the House back at least in 18, we are screwed. To those who screwed our party over...and now pretend to care about dreamers and be all big progressives now...I saw you all on social media last night...a giant fuck you goes out to you.

(11,256 posts)I don't for a second think that Trump and his ilk would shed a tear if the government were shut down indefinitely over the issue as it would play great with his lunatic base.

(4,533 posts)If the House blocks reform, some dreamers snatched and deported before Nov election, HouseRepublicans will face even more furious Dems turning out to vote, face extinction as more pro Dreamers begin to vote in future elections. It will be like CA Repubs after Pete Wilson trashing Hispanics but on a multi state field. Schumer and Senate Dems are huge winners.
Caliman73
(11,736 posts)They will pass DACA in the Senate. Then the House will write the campaign commercials for the Democratic Party candidates by refusing to consider saving these kids who 80% of the electorate support.
Democrats just need to scream that at the top of their lungs.

(34,661 posts)The Rethugs are spinning the shutdown as a Dem thing. Remember, most Dems know well there was slime to none possibility of getting DACA. They did get CHIPS off the table for seven years. BTW,CHIPS program covers more Kids in Red States than other .
As a realist, never ever trust McConnell on any Immigration Legislation. We will see another Shut Down in two weeks.

(42,282 posts)And I DO NOT mean the broken promises of Chinless Mitch, but the broken promises we the people made to the DACA kids, promises 87% of Americans want fulfilled.
And there will be no debate on whose goddamn fault it is, either.

(15,315 posts)that many were decrying before. Why take a chance when this is what happens when you try for progress? Dem's actions will show exactly why Dems and Republicans aren't the same, and if you support immigrants you don't vote GOP. When Ryan refuses to take up the bill, or when Mitch renigs on his promise. Why are we throwing their actions back on the Dems? Doing nothing but agreeing without at least attempting to fight would have only supported those who claim Dems and GOP are no different. I'm really struggling to understand.

(82,849 posts)Not bad for the minority party in both houses of Congress. Next up, the DACA hostages. Democrats need to be sure to remind everyone (particularly their memory-impaired colleagues in Congress) that DACA and a path to full citizenship is favored by a large majority of Americans, and that the damage currently being done is the sole action and responsibility of Republicans.
The Chibok girls in Nigeria are in a similar situation. I'm happy for those that have been released, but still concerned for the others who remain captive.

(10,437 posts)between the moderate republicans left and all the democrats they can pass any immigration reform, otherwise the 2018 election will be a complete annihilation for republicans. I don't think even Ryan has the moral hate against DACA kids like many of his party do.
