Even Reagan knew walls were not a good thing.

(11,736 posts)Reagan wasn't so worried about other walls coming down. While he did sign the amnesty bill granting citizenship to many undocumented immigrants, he did so with the express intention of beefing up border security to keep more people out. This was one time where Democratic politicians promised something, then ended up reneging and Republicans got played.
Remember that this was the man who started his presidential bid in Philadelphia Mississippi, where the Klan murdered civil rights advocates and then got away with it until the Federal Government stepped in. Reagan's speech was about "States Rights" and getting the Federal Government out of people's business.
Trump is Reagan without the sophistication, handling, and (from Reagan's old life before Nancy) heart. He is the natural progression (or rather regression) of conservative thought. Xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia, White Supremacy, hatred of the poor, and Christian Dominionism.
Things have changed, they have progressed as they would according to the conservative agenda.

(43,049 posts)from Germany to France without a border check. Two countries essentially at war with each other for a thousand years, and now you don't know you crossed the border until the umlauts become accent marks.
And meanwhile we've made it tougher to drive to Montreal than sail to Cuba.
America is not the shining city on the hill-- it is becoming an abandoned outhouse.
