Crowd estimates from Womens Marches on Saturday now tally over 4 million and political scientists think we may have just witnessed the largest day of demonstrations in American history.
According to data collected by Erica Chenoweth at the University of Denver and Jeremy Pressman at the University of Connecticut, marches held in more than 600 US cities were attended by at least 4.2 million people.
Even using a conservative estimate, it was the single largest day for a demonstration in the US, Chenoweth, an expert on political protests and civil resistance, told us.
Every state in America hosted a Womens March, as you can see in the map above. The events ranged from tiny gatherings in small town squares to throngs of more than 500,000 people clogging streets in cities like Washington, DC, and Los Angeles.

They also offer a link to a spreadsheet which is still collecting data: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xa0iLqYKz8x9Yc_rfhtmSOJQ2EGgeUVjvV4A8LsIaxY/edit#gid=0

Gosh, it must suck to be so dumb.

(28,582 posts)It's not just the big cities, it's the small places where we could get a much better handle on how broad and deep the opposition is. Seems like a perfect Apple/Android App. Name a civil action and log in. Overhead pics would be BS if people are willing to log in on real social issues.

(52,351 posts)This years marches numbers are still coming in and they were not as large as last year's. Some cities had larger numbers such as Chicago. No one expected this year's marches to be as big but they were much larger than anyone anticipated. RESIST!

(52,351 posts)Someone else posted a map of the cities and numbers on DU a few days ago and I caught it too. I am very involved in the activist events so I am pretty current.

(4,492 posts)And I'll be happy to march again.
My mom went to the march this year (same one as me but we didn't end up meeting up). She told me today that it is more important to get women elected and that she wants to now volunteer for female candidates. She's never done anything political in her life before.
