Goldwater and two other republicans told Nixon that it was time to go and he resigned the next afternoon.
Are there any republicans that would tell trump that it's over and more importantly, would he listen even if there were mountains of evidence that he'd lose a legal fight?
If anyone would take that drive down to the White House, they need to be thinking about it very soon.

(52,328 posts)most republicans are far more worried about being primaried, at least at this stage, so it doesn't matter how outraged democrats are. until enough *republicans* abandon donnie, it's not safe for republicans in congress to oppose him.
things could theoretically change:
a) after primaries are over *and*
b) there's *new* horrible information about donnie.
but even then it's hard to see them kicking him out right before a general election.
*maybe* right after getting their butts handed to them in november. then, looking on to 2020, they'll want donnie gone sooner rather than later.

(10,133 posts)It means the end of power for these guys and they are going to hang onto it as long as they can. They do not care about America or it's people. Not one bit. Just donors and personal wealth. Period.

(18,641 posts)They will do anything to prevent the investigation from revealing it's findings.
It's so bizarre that they are openly trying to stop the investigation.
The only reason to do so is because they know crimes will be revealed.
If information came out and they protested that it's inaccurate and biased is one thing.
This will certainly be the case if the investigation does finish.
But to try and prevent any investigation at all is ridiculously transparent.
I'm agog at how brazenly Republicans are trying to keep crimes hidden.

not because they care about the countrys well-being (we know they dont), but because Trump continues to ruin the GOP brand.
The Republicans have to appear united behind him until the midterms are over thats a given. But once the damage of lost seats is a fait accompli, Trump becomes an expendable liability.
As is always the case, the minute the midterms are over, both parties will be gearing-up for the GE in 2020 and with Trumps low approval numbers, hes not a viable candidate for re-election. Theyd be much better off putting Pence in the WH, and using the two years between the midterms and the 2020 election to rebuild the brand.
Add into the mix the fact that once Muellers findings are disclosed, the GOP is going to be buried in shit and even if Trump himself escapes justice (which is a BIG if), the Republican brand will never recover in time to dig itself out from under before we go to the polls in November 2020.
I think there are Republicans who will tell Trump that he either resign (for whatever reason he wants to conjure up), or face the public humiliation of impeachment. In fact, Ive no doubt the plan to oust Trump from their midst has already been decided upon. It will be a "behind closed doors" push - they'll offer him a chance to save face by resigning, install Pence in the Oval Office, and move on from there.
Going into the 2020 GE with a scandal-ridden Trump is already a non-starter for Republicans - and once Mueller reveals all, they will be more than anxious to Dump the Trump for their own survival as a party.
