My mother was a very attractive woman of marriageable age in post-war Austria.

My father looked pretty sharp in a uniform, and had an officer's paycheck from Uncle Sam.

He didn't speak a word of German.

She didn't speak a word of English.

Growing up, I used to ask them, "If you couldn't talk to each other, how did you manage to fall in love?"

And they'd just look at each other.... and smile.

There is no question that she wanted out of Austria, and he knew that he wasn't going to find Marlene Dietrich wandering around North Carolina in the 40's. There certainly was an attraction, but neither of them denied that there was something of a, I guess you'd say "exchange" of sorts. But they were both sort of "country folk" and had a lot in common. So off to Raleigh she went with him to finish up his degree that his ROTC commitment had interrupted, and then on to the new American suburban dream.

Now, of course, the Trump marriage likely is not more than a straightforward bargain, but I'm not going to second guess the choices of a young woman who found an opportunity to lead a life that she found preferable to her prospects in Slovenia.
