To be nothing but a golden symbol.

I'm not sure everyone realizes that gold is just another chemical/mineral. It has a few salient features but is pretty worthless compared to iron, sodium, and many much more common elements.

Gold is only valued because is was thought to be rare - and is relatively so in the earth crust. It doesn't corrode easily, it does conduct electricity well, it is soft/malleable. However there are lots of other elements/amalgams that do so much more cheaply and don't enrich the horders/lovers - the elites.
