New diet book makes some strange claims about body chemistry

Health writer Julia Belluz has taken a close look at the extremely restrictive diet that is a key part of the personal training approach that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady follows, as described in The TB12 Method: How to Achieve a Lifetime of Sustained Peak Performance. Brady claims his diet is "anti-inflammatory" and composed of 80% "alkaline" foods, but Belluz challenges his nutrition claims and correctly notes:

Avoiding supposedly acidifying foods in order to balance the body's pH level and improve health and athletic performance is not supported by evidence.
No evidence supports his diet for improving muscle recovery, but adequate carbohydrate intake can replenish depleted glycogen and protein can help muscle building.
Anti-inflammatory diets need not be as restrictive as Brady's diet.

Celebrity health advice is generally a bad idea. Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP is a hot mess of woo. Looks like Tom Brady is another example.

No white sugar. No white flour. No MSG. I’ll use raw olive oil, but I never cook with olive oil. I only cook with coconut oil. Fats like canola oil turn into trans fats. ... I use Himalayan pink salt as the sodium. I never use iodized salt. ... What else? No coffee. No caffeine. No fungus. No dairy.

Even certain vegetables and fruits are off limits. Brady doesn’t eat nightshade vegetables, such as peppers, tomatoes, and eggplants.

Said that he could Not eat anything that was purple. I wonder if blueberries were considered blue or purple?

I have grown white eggplant and many of the plants did better than the purple plants but was surprised there was a diet that identified the color of your food. He also shunned mushrooms. Weird.

Report: Tom Brady's Quack Doctor Banned From Patriots' Planes And Sidelines

Alex Guerrero has maintained a strange relationship with the Patriots since 2013. He operates the TB12 therapy center next to the Patriots stadium, where he treats players, and his relationship with Brady affords him access to Patriots sidelines and the team plane. However, a day after rumors surfaced regarding a simmering disagreement between Guerrero and Bill Belichick, the Boston Globe now reports that Belichick has barred him from the sidelines this season and revoked his plane privileges.

Belichick declined to elaborate why, although it could have something to do with Guerrero being sued twice for fraud. Guerrero also once sold products that he claimed could cure cancer and concussions and, more recently, he’s been helping develop and push Brady’s nonsensical “wellness program.” Belichick also banned Guerrero from training any players besides Brady, an arrangement that began while Guerrero was under investigation for practicing without a license (he was later cleared).
