then switched to teaching elem school (artists can't afford rent sometimes and forget health insur!) and I am appalled I taught art to my students in lessons from all subjects (math, social studies, science, reading/writing, etc) and they loved it and learned about the subject much better. I can't imagine any legit art teacher stifling freedom and creativity. I always told my kids what I learned in Art School, "Art is whatever you believe it to be". It is a thoroughly subjective opinion and experience.

Sadly, the repubs for decades have made feminism/feminist a dirty word. Listen to a lot of women who say stuff like, we don't need feminism. I'm not a feminist, etc. It makes me sick. Many women are our own worst enemy. Or maybe it's that those women are with rich men and don't give a damn.

43. I wish I could remember where I read it -- Schlafly largely responsible for defeating ERA.

Feb 2018

Not that long ago (it doesn't take me long to forget sources, sometimes) I read a rather lengthy account of everything that PS did to encourage people to vote against ratifying the ERA. It made the pretty convincing argument that she alone carried more responsiblilty for ERA's failure to be ratified than any other person or organization. The irony was that she wasn't much of a stay-at-home mom herself, but that was the ideal she claimed to be defending. She worked so tirelessly for ERA's defeat it's hard to understand what drove her. Only religious dogma seems to be able to get RWNJs to make that kind of effort.

46. STOP (ERA) was an acronym for "Stop Taking Our Privileges"
Thu Feb 8, 2018, 12:40 PM

She argued that the ERA would take away gender-specific privileges currently enjoyed by women, including "dependent wife" benefits under Social Security, separate restrooms for males and females, and exemption from the Selective Service (the Army draft).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phyllis_Schlafly#Equal_Rights_Amendment

There were states that ratified the amendment and she got them to rescind it. She was a real piece of work.

Her own mother worked during the great depression, and she worked in an ammunition plant during WW2 and then went on to college and law school. She also seemed to claim that feminism helps younger women and minorities while screwing over older white women, and got supporters based on that lie.
