When you go to the eye doctor, and she ask you, which one looks better-- this or this? When she's testing your eyes. Does anybody else have trouble telling the difference some of the time? I had that experience today. I couldn't tell a difference between them and I was trying to do it right but I think the doctor got impatient with me although she was too professional to show it.

(26,109 posts)They always get impatient with me because I take so long over it, but it's darn important to get it right.
honestly, I think they are used to it / want to know that information. I'll say, show me the first one again, ok, show me the second one.
Sometimes it is a matter of where you are focused, or if you squint a little, and so on. Let them know if you are struggling. That's the reason you are there.

Then she can show you something else.
This gives her information about your vision.

(3,619 posts)so often I simply cannot tell the difference. I feel badly having to ask over and over to see the comparisons again. Even then, I just pick one. It's tough and frustrating. I wish there were an easier way to make that determination.

(17,442 posts)I just quickly say again please and don't explain. I've never sensed an impatience on their part.
Personally I think they get going too fast. i don't know if they need it to be fast for some reason.

(25,861 posts)I suppose it makes a difference exactly what is going on with your eyes, but it seems to me as though the "Which one looks better" question is intended to refine exactly what prescription you need now. I believe I always get to the point where I can't tell the difference, and that tells the doctor that they've got the prescription nailed.
Just a semi-educated guess on my part.

(51,608 posts)for a few years and now I am just a patient but the doctors, at least the three that have taken over the practice over the past 20 years, never lose patience with this patient. It is part of their job and they are used to it. This is how they are able to make an accurate diagnosis. I always sigh a thousand times since I can never decide between two choices when it comes down to the exact power. The doctors acknowledge this and it helps them to be more precise. Don't worry about it. This IS normal.
What I like to do is go sit down and say, "What chart?" as if they haven't heard that joke a zillion times. They should have cool eye charts that spell stuff...like

(7,617 posts)and had one of those tests. When applicable, I just told them the two options were "about the same." They told me I could stand to get a new prescription. However, ever since I've had cataracts removed from both my eyes, I don't really need distance glasses and when it comes to reading, I use OTC reading glasses.

If you see no difference, say so.
It's not a 'pass or fail' test.
