18 year old purchases cigarettes. You have to be 21 to purchase a handgun.

But it is true in some states, I believe, that 18-year olds can possess handguns that were given as gifts or purchased in a private sale.
Federal law prohibits any dealer from selling to an under 21. Not sure what the rule for private sales is.

You're not responsible enough or mature enough to to manage a GD beer but it's cool if you have a killing machine? We have seriously fallen into the Twightlite Zone.
