Most Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, etc practice a form of worship, reflection, devotion, etc on Ash Wednesday, and have a "project" for Lent.

"Remember O man, dust thou art and dust thou shalt return" That's what the celebrant, pastor etc says as he/she rubs the ahses on your forehead. It marks the season of Lent. 40 days excluding Sunday's before Easter!

As a child. I still don't think it is bad to be reminded of our mortality. It can keep us from becoming vain and frivolous people.

messengers because they remind us of our impermanence. Ash Wednesday has the same idea.
