(9,895 posts)Do not forget this though...the number of Millionaires in Congress is STAGGERING...on both sides of the aisle...when the make up of the Congress better reflects the economic reality of the population, THEN, and only then, will we begin to see real change in our policies...

That each member of Congress shall be paid an annual salary equal to the median annual income of the citizens residing in the district that said member represents,
And that each member of Congress shall receive non-salary compensation no greater than the average of such compensation paid to the citizens living within the district said member represents in Congress.
Want more money? Do something to raise the median income in your district.
Want more benefits? Get 'em for your voters.

(6,926 posts)our government officials (maybe not all but too many) work for the people who pay them the most. They do not work for those who elected them.

Regardless of Russia's involvement in CU, they have certainly used it to their advantage to take control of our country, along with not-so well disguised monely laundering...

(51,593 posts)affordable health care, gun restriction, DACA, pro choice, Climate Change reality, etc yet these issues are labeled as incorrectly as only Dem issues. When the majority of Americans are in favor of these then the GOP is NOT representing Americans. They are using Dems as the scape goat to continue lying. They represent only one group, that group is the NRA, Religious Right and Russian who are regular donors to the GOP election campaigns

(16,245 posts)Maybe a work around is to ban ammunition, or tax the hell out of it. I also think all gun owners need to carry insurance, to pay into a victims' fund that would pay medical expenses. Because the survivors will have life-long injuries, in many cases severe.
We live in an absurd world where it is harder to get allergy medicine than guns.

(37,573 posts)I already have two worthless degrees.
We have more green energy now than at any time in the past - I am fairly sure.
One reason we can't have free college tuition is that a lot of people do not want to pay higher taxes. The same is probably true for single payer, except many have little idea how much insurance is costing them (or don't care), probably because the savings will not come back to them.
For example, working full time for my employer I would get health insurance for free. My employer pays something like $800 a month (and for married couples or families they pay substantially more (so much for equal pay for equal work)) for that health insurance. So if we switch to single payer which costs, say, $500 a month in taxes, that is a net savings of $300 a month. Except who is gonna pay the taxes? Unless my employer pays them, I am out money, because the $800 a month they save is not going to come back to me in extra pay. I suspect many, if not most, Americans are already in a place where their health care is heavily subsidized by their employers, and it is they, the people, who do not wanna pay more to help other people who are not so lucky.

(7,395 posts)And as for the anti-tax crew, FTS. Ridiculous. It's a false duality.
This country boomed when the highest marginal tax rate was 90%. The wealthy have too much money. If this was not the case, they couldn't afford to buy the politicians that tilt the playing field toward their greedy maws.
There's more than enough money to do everything. The problem is the Hoarding Religion. It's infected everything.
Living simply is good. Living simply is healthy. Gold toilets and fifteen houses when people beg for food in the streets?
Stupid and cruel and a recipe for misery for everyone.
