she just said on the Today show that Congress and society are failing our kids b/c we don't keep them safe, and continuing to say "thoughts and prayers" is getting us nowhere. Thank you!

(52,162 posts)both the kids at that school and the authorities at that school reported him and took action (he was expelled which is very hard to do). After that, it is on us, not them. Why was this kid able to get a gun?

(27,813 posts)Elected officials and law enforcement are tasked with protecting us. Schools are there to educate kids. School administrators should obviously work with law enforcement to deal with this, but teachers have enough to deal with without being single-handedly tasked with preventing violence in the classroom.

(2,443 posts)There are individuals with mental health problems in every community that are not part of the NCIC record. Unless there is some other cause to fail a background check, these individuals will all be able to purchase guns. I may know that someone is mentally ill, but that does not mean that there is a finding in a court case of mental illness that gets reported. Background checks go through NCIC not your friends, neighbors, co-workers and school authorities....

like the right wing mantra of "praying the gay away", praying for the end to gun violence won't do a thing either.
praying is the passive aggressive way of "doing something" without being bothered to do a damn thing at all.
(and to be clear, I'm not advocating for the fucking stupid pray the gay away bullshit)

(4,888 posts)The second amendment is a smokescreen.
Russia, the gun industry, and the Republicans have formed an unholy alliance and have declared war on us. Everyone in their orbit is making money off it. The more they kill, the more frightened people become, and buy more guns. It's just free advertising to the gun industry, and sows more chaos that the Russians/Republicans can take advantage of.
I think no mention of gun violence should omit links to Russia, NRA and Republicans. They are killing our children for power and profit.
