Resist folks resist!! The NRA is killing way more folks than any foreign terrorist.

(1,714 posts)It's easy to blame the NRA, but--the NRA represents millions of actual people, who support gun ownership, who vote, and who donate.
Do you think the NRA prints its own $$$ to throw at the GOP? Of course not. It all comes from people who support the NRA because of what they do for them.
The truth is that the more talk there is about bans and confiscation, the more money the NRA will collect, and the more money will go into gun-friendly Congresspeople's coffers.

(366 posts)You do know there's only about 4 million dues paying members of the NRA?
And you do know that right at 74% of those members support mandatory background checks?
The fact is the NRA gets most of their money from the firearms industry.
It's not the members screaming for more guns, it's the guys who make them.

(1,714 posts)and where the NRA gets its $$.
My b-i-l is an avid gun owner, hunter, target shooter, NRA member, and staunch supporter. I know that when I tried to discuss the issue with him years ago, he had an answer for every point I made. When he mentioned "collectors," I gave up arguing.
I respect his right to own his guns, and am well aware that not one of his (many) guns has ever hurt anyone. Nor have the vast majority of other guns or gun owners in the country.

(4,448 posts)The gun industry does about $31 billion in revenue each year. Not a small chunk, but not the trillions I was guessing.
If the entire gun industry were a Fortune 500 company, that is all gun makers merged into one company, they would have to do $31billion in revenue right? That would put them as at #91 on the Fortune 500 list.
About the size of Rite Aid drug stores.
That got me wondering about how many gun manufacturers on the Fortune 500. Surprisingly, not a single one. The largest is Smith & Wesson at $1.2 billion. But to join the Fortune 500, you need $5.14 billion. (Yahoo by comparison is #498 at $5.16 billion). How about the Fortune 1000? Nope. You need $1.7 billion to displace Regis.
I don't think it's the gun industry that is running congress. They have at least 1000 other much more powerful masters. It think it's the NRA and NRA minded people.

But I get your narrative.... it's consistent and on-point today.

(1,714 posts)and the idea that across the country millions of people are going to take to the streets, shut down the country, and demand X, Y, or Z is simply unrealistic. I don't doubt that the vast majority supports an AWB, but probably not to the point where they will put their own livelihoods on the line for something they feel will never affect them.
