WASHINGTON Senator Elizabeth Warren made a surprise appearance at the National Congress of American Indians Wednesday, forcefully denouncing President Trumps use of the name Pocahontas to deride her and defending her claims of Native American heritage more expansively than she has before.

Warren did not apologize for her undocumented claims that her mothers family had Cherokee blood instead, reaffirming: My mothers family was part Native American. And my daddys parents were bitterly opposed to their relationship. So, in 1932, when Mother was 19 and Daddy had just turned 20, they eloped.
The story they lived will always be a part of me, she said, as tears came to her eyes. And no one not even the president of the United States will ever take that part of me away. But she told the gathered tribal leaders from around the country that she drew a distinction between claiming native ancestry and claiming tribal membership. She repeatedly referred to Trumps insensitivity, not only in calling her Pocahontas but in doing it last year during an event at the White House meant to honor Navajo code-talker veterans of World War II.
The joke, I guess, is supposed to be on me, she said. I get why some people think theres hay to be made here. You wont find my family members on any rolls, and Im not enrolled in a tribe. And I want to make something clear. I respect that distinction. I understand that tribal membership is determined by tribes and only by tribes.
Responding to critics who claim she used a minority status to gain prestigious law professorships, she said: I never used my family tree to get a break or get ahead. I never used it to advance my career.

(11,257 posts)She didn't shy away from anything and she offered a completely explanation. Most important, she called it out for what it is - both a ginned-up controversy and a way for people like Trump to mask their racism.
This was pitch perfect in every way.
