Forget Trump; Republicans Are The Problem Now

Russia certainly fires up the Democratic base. It is the topic that seems to interest it the most, aside from Trump himself. But it should be noted that the Russia story is itself a Trump story, and this interest has been fueled in part by the relentless focus on this narrative by party leaders and media allies.

An Open Conspiracy

That lets the Republican Party, including Trump, off the hook for its better-documented nefarious deeds. With this week’s unveiling of Trump’s infrastructure plans and budget proposals, as well as other recent stories, American have learned that the president and his party:

Want to cut Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid by $1.8 trillion.

These cuts would hit seniors especially hard, since Medicare is their primary source of health care and Medicaid pays roughly two-thirds of all nursing home costs. As Nancy Altman of Social Security Works says, Trump also has proposed slashing Meals on Wheels, home heating assistance, and other programs for seniors.

Seniors turn out to vote in off-year elections in disproportionately large numbers. When voters miss this story, it helps Republicans.

Would impose work requirements and lifetime caps on Medicaid.

The Administration’s drive toward work requirements for Medicaid will be devastating for poor families. 43 million Americans are poor. And since 60 percent of Americans will spend at least one year of their lives in poverty, according to a 2015 study, this could affect many more working families in coming years.

again - in 2018 we need to run against the Repug Party and not Trump. Trump is not up for re-election in 2018 - but all of the House is and a lot of the Senate is.

It is time to focus all our campaigning energies and dollars against the Repugs. We need to take back control of Congress - both the House and Senate. Then we can deal with Trump.

. . .Eisenhower, Rockefeller and Dirksen weren't a major problem. Different than the dems, yeah. Same with Chuck Percy. But, since the early 70's there haven't been many R's who weren't the enemy of the working person.

I was pretty young at the time but I remember him and thinking that he was different in his perspective on what was going on. The JFK assassination hit close to home for my family as my dad was a neighbor and acquaintance of the K family at Cape Cod. I was taught to use a gin at four years of age but also had and still have a healthy and fearful respect for what they could do, not a hunter and don't use guns for entertainment.

My awakening to politics was during the JFK administration, was in Key West during the missile crisis. I had kind of been acquainted since my parents argued politics openly but the KW stint was a major awakening... and then the assassination. Been paying attention since then, even got an advanced degree in polisci.

My parents were Kennedy democrats but voted for Dirksen (IL had two old horses in Senate, one from each party) because he was "not one of those kind of Republicans". "Those kind", given my parents' age, meant McCarthy, Goldwater, et al. Dirksen was definitely not one of "those kind".

They can choose to impoverish themselves, endanger their lives, and ruin their grandchildren's lives, or they can vote Democratic.

Rush Limbaugh, Hannity show, and the Falwell Old Time Gospel Hour.

And break up the seniors right wing breakfast clubs where they parrot all of the above propaganda they are being shovel fed.

Easier said than done. They need this in their daily lives. Its a social thing. I watched this evolve with my own mother.

Unfortunately, I think they are so brainwashed and out of touch with reality that they won’t change their voting habits of voting for anything with an R beside its name - until their own wallets take direct hits on SS and Medicare. When its too late. Which it may already be too late.

Trump is the face of the beast, but the entire Republican Party conspired with the Russians to ensure a Republican President and many Congressional races.

By focusing our ire on one man in particular, we only aid and abet the smokescreen.
