The Energy 202: Pruitt says flying first-class is safer. But some airline safety experts aren't so sure.By Dino Grandoni February 15 at 9:46 AM
The Environmental Protection Agency says that Scott Pruitt has traveled first-class on flights both domestically and internationally over the last year because it is simply safer for him.
-snip-
Airline safety and security experts were left struggling to explain the EPA's rationale without a full explanation from the agency. One pilot was outright incredulous.
Chesley Sully Sullenberger III, the retired pilot who once landed a damaged Airbus A320 in the Hudson River and who is now an aviation and safety expert at CBS News, had just this to say by email: "First class is not safer than economy."
There is no reason to believe that sitting at the front of a plane is safer than sitting toward the back should the plane crash, said another aviation expert.
"I cannot think of anything that would make sitting upfront safer, said Harro Ranter, chief executive of the Aviation Safety Network. In an actual accident, best chances of survival are usually in the rear."

in the event of a crash, if you are in FC, you are going to be the first one to bite the bullet

(25,858 posts)If I fly I buy myself a first class ticket because of how awful it's become in coach. Plus, I seem to automatically get the bypass designation that way.
The airlines have trained people to go for the cheapest fare no matter what. A while back a friend of mine was flying from Albuquerque to Minneapolis, and complained that she was going to be changing planes in Atlanta. Why? I asked. Because it's the cheapest fare, she responded. Luckily all the flights went smoothly and were on time.
I've also learned that if I book far enough in advance I can get a decent first class fare. Yes, it won't be as cheap as the lowest possible coach ticket, but in my opinion it's worth it.

(4,448 posts)In landing accidents, the aircraft commonly tumbles. The nose breaks off, the tail breaks off.
This leaves the ends of the main fuselage to take brunt of the impacts. FC is usually totally destroyed, as is just forward of the tail section. The pilots in the nose have a good chance to survive, as do those in the tail.
United Flight 232 is good example of this.
Now blood clots and Deep Vein Thrombosis? Oh yea - first class is much safer than sardine class.

(2,243 posts)I usually sit as far back as I can. It's safer for me to keep an eye on the back when I need to swipe a couple of extra cokes.

(13,553 posts)First Class are the second ones.
Back when one could smoke on a plane, we used to say the safest place in a crash was in the smoking section in the rear.
