I am not trying to blame anyone, but we're there no steps in place to prevent intruders from entering the building?

(3,479 posts)That someone didn't try? Hearing a lot of victim blaming here, at a time when the facts can change quickly.

(32,610 posts)This school has more than one building. How do you think they move from building to building for their classes?
I volunteer at a high school three days a week and we have four buildings.

(26,263 posts)My Aunt left some money to her parish school, in her will. I was shocked that the door was unlocked and I didn't have to 'buzz' in. Nobody either tried to stop me, or questioned me. I was surprised, then. Now I'm shocked.

(62,444 posts)Maybe schools are different where you live, but schools with which I am familiar have parking lots and doors.

(28,394 posts)Since Sandy Hook anyhow. All of our buildings were retrofitted to have a "mouse trap" entry way. Anyone entering the building had to ring the buzzer, and go through a couple sets of doors before entering directly to the front office. No one could just wander in and roam about the halls. Leaving a door open could be grounds for dismissal.

(51,593 posts)at my school, had doors that could only be locked FROM THE OUTSIDE! After Sandy Hook we had a staff meeting and my idiot principal wasn't even aware of this minor fact until I raised my hand and filled her in.

(28,394 posts)We had to lock the doors from the outside (hall side) and keep it locked while kids were in the room. Every time some kid had to use the bathroom, someone would have to get up to let them back in. It was a nuisance, but that's how it was.
Another thing was that all the doors opened out... toward the hall. So any advice about blockading the doors was useless. (I was the one who told the principal.)

(28,394 posts)Makes sense that the doors would be wide open as students were leaving the building. As a former student, he would know that.

(5,523 posts)Two elderly ladies, one behind a counter and the other behind sliding glass window. Even though they knew I was going to visit, I didn't have to do anything except sign a logiin/logout sheet. No other security. It's a rural school and I know almost all the male students have access to guns and there's heavy drug use. My son graduated 6 years ago and I know the situation was the same back then. The only reason I can think of why there hasn't been violence is the low student population, 383 and the classes mix socially. I hope it stays that way.
