There is an AK-47 which is a Soviet era automatic weapon and the progenitor of the many versions around the world in semi-automatic. What used to be the weapon of the reviled commies is now a darling idol of the gun nut.

There is an AR-15. That is the title for the semi-automatic version of the Vietnam era M-16 and the modern military version M-4.

Whoever was telling you that did not understand the weapon he was talking about much less whether they are illegal.

You can own fully automatic weapons in this country if you have a license and are cleared by the fed gov't last I checked.

Have a nation-wide mandatory 20 year sentence with no chance of parole for selling an assault weapon to anyone not representing arms acquisition for the military. Then it would not only be illegal, but illegal with consequences severe enough to make a potential violator gulp at the prospect of being caught.
