Start at the source. The person that sells the gun.

There should be a national database of every AR-15 or semi-automatic weapon that is sold in this country. In order to purchase one of these types of weapons would require proof of address and identification.

Also, we should note that most of these weapons that are used in these types of shootings were purchased in the last 12 months or so. Those folks that have had these weapons for many years are not likely to use them.

Any person that purchases these types of weapons and post comments or photos on the social media should be investigated by legal authorities. That should be considered a red flag.

This would be considered a compromise proposal. The ideal solution would be to ban all purchases in the future, even though there are many in the hands of gun-owners at present.

I think this might be a good beginning.

exactly how do you plan to get potentially violent people, many with criminal records, to register their guns?

due to 5th amendment protections, convicted felons cannot be required to register their illegal guns. So the people most likely to commit violent crimes get a legal pass.

Haynes v. United States

felons and others prohibited from possessing firearms could not be compelled to incriminate themselves through registration.

5. Most of these guns that are used in these shootings are recently purchased.

No one should be permitted to sell one of these guns without it going into a database. Also, long time owners are not likely to use them in these types of situations, the facts would show. It is not important to get the records of all these weapons, just the ones recently purchased.

6. How do you get the millions of recently purchased guns into the database?

just wondering.

And doesn't that simply mean potential mass shooter will simply seek out a gun not in the database? There would be a huge demand and black market for such guns.

A possible five-year sentence or take the name and address of the buyer, which would you choose? I doubt that there are "millions" of recently purchased AR-15's?? Of course, no system would be perfect and stop every murder.

11. Obviously, one million of these weapons are not going to be used in school shootings.

The goal would be to catch that one in a million that might be used. Perhaps they will brag on social media about being a "professional school shooter", or perhaps they might be arrested for another crime, at which time their name would show up in the database.

Most of the 7-10 million will never be used in such shootings.

Prosecute the illegal immigrant, not the person who hires them
Prosecute the hooker, not the guy who hires her.
Prosecute the worker at the meat packing plant, not the management that hires them,
and so on and so forth

10. One step further back to the manufacturers

Someone's flooding the market with firearms designed to massacre people. I'll bet they're turning a pretty penny on the profit, too. If the manufacturers were held financially and criminally liable for the mayhem caused by their product, we might see a change in the culture.

Australia did it, and that country was founded by criminals too ostracized to be allowed back into decent English society. If Australia can do it, the U.S. should certainly be able to. Yeah, it costs money to buy back all the weapons. But the medical care provided to victims of gun sprees isn't free, either.
