(17,984 posts)Laws don't mean anything. Access is everything. Controlling who has access to assault rifles (meaning only the military gets to have them) is the way to go.

(85,996 posts)...banning them would seem a no-brainer, at this point, but we know the opposition covets guns more than lives.
I wish politics was as simple as seeking the most comprehensive solution and having it propelled into action or law on its own initiative. Reality is, we need to seek and enact every remedy short of that worthwhile (but politically elusive) goal of eliminating all assault weapons.
I also don't think you can apply your own life experience with guns to the entirety of the nation. Age is as relevant to gun ownership as it is to operating an automobile. Moreover, refusing to regulate such a potentially dangerous object in the minutia, because you advocate a more grand solution, is just myopic and irresponsible.

Edit: sorry this was meant to be a response to the original topic

(17,984 posts)Actually, I should break it into two separate points. 1) Assault rifles should be left in military hands 2) Gun ownership must be restricted. Number two is dependent upon age and background checks, and should be the avenue we pursue as regards to new legislation. So I agree with you, but I just want to point out that we shouldn't stop at raising the age. I want to stress that it is merely a first step.
