Ban schools.
That'll solve our school shooting epidemic. Ban all schools, from kindergarten through college. Just shut 'em down and turn them into blood banks. (Very popular in our town!)
The current Republican government might just go for the idea. They certainly wouldn't see the harm. They might even throw in violent media and games, as well as books. That group of miscreants isn't the least bit shy about proposing big, ridiculous, untenable "solutions", because, while they may be idiots, they're not exactly stupid. Suggesting a wholesale shift in our national norm at least begins a conversation and provides a platform from which they can negotiate. Sometimes they even fucking win.
Better yet, the Democrats could propose a similar ridiculous, untenable idea. Like ban all guns. All of 'em, from BBs to rocket launchers. Confiscate them all. Replace them with cats. (Also very popular in our town!)
We're not stupid either. There are at least a handful of progressive members of Congress who are bold enough to proffer untenable ideas like Medicare for all, free college tuition, or a guaranteed living wage. What's stopping them from demanding a wholesale gun ban? We know (because we've been lectured about it for so many years) that you can't negotiate a reasonable solution unless you start BIG. So what's stopping some from proposing the idea? It gets the conversation started, and provides a platform from which we can negotiate. Perhaps we'll win?
Desperate times, and all. I'm serious here. BAN GUNS. What's the harm?
