Friend stated stricter gun control wouldn't stop school shootings. Illegal .guns always available

His conclusion: gun control waste of time, money, energy. There will alwats be school shootings with multiple easily available illegal guns.

How do you cope with this attitude??

Once he was thrown out of school, and investigated by police he should have had his guns confiscated and be unable to buy any more.

Cars and roads are always available. Laws against murder don't stop murder. Murderous people and a supply of victims are always available. Laws against stealing don't stop theft. Sticky-fingered people and lots of things to steal are always available.

So why not abolish all laws that promote public safety - law-abiding people obey them, but criminals just violate them. So what your friend is saying about gun laws is that gun lovers who won't obey them are by nature criminals.

Would he support repealing the laws against drunk driving and simply rely on punishing those who actually kill someone rather than punishing those caught driving drunk before they kill someone?

When MADD got started, a lot of people said, "Oh, you'll never get all the drunk drivers off the road. Heck, it's almost a rite of passage in some quarters to drive blind drunk." No, MADD hasn't succeeded in getting all the drunk drivers off the road all these years later. But nobody brags about driving drunk anymore, and the penalties for driving drunk cause a LOT of drivers to make arrangements ahead of time or to call for a ride when they know they're impaired.

What if we made irresponsibility with guns every bit as socially ostracized as drunk driving? Start with financial and criminal liability for manufacturers and dealers who are flooding the U.S. with weapons? Go right down the line, and put some real teeth in the laws. As it is, if you're caught with a gun at the airport by TSA, you might - might - get a slap on the wrist with a wet noodle. La de dah, and we see dozens of stories every week about some dope getting caught with a gun in his luggage. What if the penalty for "forgetting" your loaded pistol in your carry-on was confiscation of all that person's firearms, a four-figure fine, a month in jail, and loss of right to keep and bear arms for at least 10 years? A second offense would have harsher penalties, naturally.

Confiscation. Before it could even be attempted, it would fail, leading to a civil war.

... in how I respond to the same tired talking points. I used to extend the proverbial olive branch by saying, "look, no one wants massacres, so let's just try to keep the semi-automatics with ridiculous magazines out of the hands of people who will use them this way..." Every time, the response was something idiotic ranging from:

2nd Amendment freedum Murca
My rights, my rights, my rights
Who will protect us from the gubmint?

And I'd just shake my head and let it go. Last night was different. A family member called and this came up, and he's a gunhumper to the nth degree. I'm sure he was expecting my usual respectful tone, but he got the opposite.

I told him, as soon as he started with the inane crap above, to go fuck himself. That he was more loyal to a Russia-funded terrorist group than to the safety of my kids. That he's a gunhumper because his wife left him and he 'believes' this stupidity because he hopes that it adds a couple of inches to his tiny, emasculated penis. I wrapped it up by telling him that he's nearly as responsible for every dead kid/innocent victim in this country as the shooters. Finally, I told him once again to fuck off.

I'm done trying to debate these fuckers. I'm done trying to talk some sense into them. Hit them where it hurts - their tiny little penises. I haven't melted down like that for a long time, but fuck him - he deserved it and I'll ruthlessly stomp him every time I see him for quite some time now.

I have three small children. My wife is a dual citizen American/Canadian. With every one of these school massacres, our discussion about moving north gets just a bit more serious in tone. Part of me just wants to make sure my kids don't get murdered. Another part sorta wants to leave these nutballs to themselves. Maybe if they start killing each other, someone somewhere will figure out that this is madness, but that's probably a long shot too.

and the majority of mass shootings have involved legal guns, purchased by the shooter, or a friend or immediate family. the problem starts with the original purchaser.

ask your friend what he would do if the gov't banned guns. I've yet to meet a gun enthusiast who says they would hand over their guns. they ALL say that they would hide them, or the ol NRA/Heston quote "you can have my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hand". most are so proud of this attitude, they volunteer the info, no need to even ask. they don't give a damn about their rights, they don't give a damn about being a law abiding citizen. they would happily join the ranks of criminals that they blame "the problem" on.
