(10,476 posts)Non-American kids are just as deserving of being able to go to school safely, y'know.

(33,349 posts)Syria is engulfed in a long civil war. We are not, supposedly.
Please refocus your condemnation to those who are refusing to act and thereby condoning war weaponry being easily obtained by civilians.

(33,349 posts)Your sanctimony is as misplaced as the previous commenter.
There was absolutely nothing in my original post that would suggest or imply that the people of Syria or any other "non-American" deserves the real terror depicted by the Luckovich drawing at the head of this discussion. It was and is an unreasonable stretch to assume such an intent from "[t]his is not Syria". The situation naturally creates raw nerves, sensitive feelings, anger and hopelessness. It should not be treated as an opportunity to self-promote moral superiority.
I live in an area that votes nearly 80% Republican. Every face-to-face political discussion always, always devolves into refuting the latest insane rants from Rush, Fox and Alex Jones about Hillary, Obama, "deep state", "demon rats", and NRA.
My wife taught for 27 years and retired as school shootings began their current upturn.
My children made it all through school without an active shooter incident.
I hope my grandchildren can do the same, but this shit is getting worse.
My son is a teacher and a coach.
Note the victim list for Florida and then perhaps reconsider your presumptious, pretentious commentary on my empathy.

(11,238 posts)it gave a different meaning to the first one. Yes, I too read the meaning of "It shouldn't be this way" as "the way it is in Syria."
All you had to do was say you didn't mean it the way it came across, instead of being hyper-defensive and tossing weird insults around. (Pretentious? Brother, heal thyself. Also, might want to check your spelling before posting.)

(1,002 posts)I bet many children were afraid to go to school today - especially the younger ones. How tragic that our children no longer feel safe in their classrooms.

(19,861 posts)you today and to keep their guards up and be observant. Losing our children to gun violence is just heart wrenching. We gotta get some sensible guns controls (e.g., no semi-automatic weapons) in place and now.
Heard a statistic this morning that in 2018, gun violence at schools is happening on average every 68 hours.

(6,592 posts)... There were many reasons why, but feeling fear every time I saw them off to school wasn't one of them.
It makes me realize how much times have changed.
