What he was doing during the debate was literally upstaging her. I suspect he was purposely trying to remain on camera (ALL ABOUT ME!) so as not to give her full focus, but his fidgeting looks like a bored child during a school play waiting to say his line.

And there was a long monologue that occurred downstage of me, and I was blocked to at some point cross from one side of the couch to the other on a level up directly behind him, mirroring the cross that actor was at some point going to make for balance.

Over a boring three month run, experimenting every which way with timing and amount of movement, I discovered I had absolute power to pull focus and kill his big laugh line if I started crossing right before he said it, or I could help out and amplify the laugh by holding completely still and waiting for the audience to respond before moving. If only we had some kind of person...who could perhaps give us some kind of direction on these types of things!
