Letter to the Editor: Trump is loyal to Russia, not the US -- Madison, WI
Dear Editor: President Trump demands loyalty.
Loyalty can be good or bad. Loyalty to truth is good. Loyalty to lies is not. Loyalty to our country is good. Loyalty to our country’s enemy is not.
U.S. intelligence chiefs unanimously agree that Russia meddled in U.S. 2016 elections and is targeting our 2018 elections. One of the chiefs bluntly stated that we are under attack.
The U.S. Congress passed a law in 2017 by a vote of 517 to 5 to punish Russia for meddling in our elections. A provision of that law would place U.S. sanctions on countries that purchase Russian military equipment. Trump refused to implement that provision. Trump ignored the nearly unanimous vote of his Republican House and Senate in favor of Russia.
In this instance, our own president was more loyal to our enemy than to his own country. That is a very sad and dangerous situation.
Instead of draining the swamp, Trump has contaminated it. Wisconsin politicians are part of the contamination. U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson looked silly when he promoted the absurd idea that an anti-Trump “secret society” existed within the FBI. House Speaker Paul Ryan supported Trump’s bogus attacks on the FBI. Gov. Walker, who shares Trump’s fondness for deceit, has been cozying up to Trump and angling for a job in the Trump administration ever since the campaign.
We are stuck with Trump for now, but in November we can elect a Congress that has the moral courage to do the right thing and impeach him. Loyalty to our country demands it.
