Pennsylvania Governor Can’t Recall Requirements Of Voter ID Law He Signed

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/07/pennsylvania_voter_id_law_tom_corbett.php?ref=fpnewsfeed

Pennsylvanians unsure about the requirements of their state’s new voter ID bill have some notable company: their governor.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett (R) on Wednesday couldn’t remember when asked by a reporter what forms of identification would be accepted under the voter ID law he signed earlier this year.

Corbett was asked about a new report showing that 43 percent of Philadelphia voters lack a valid form of identification issued by the state.

“We’ve been working with the nursing homes to get people new ID. It can be military ID. There’s two or three other forms right now off the top of my head I don’t have it here in front of me,” Corbett said.

The forms of ID Corbett forgot about include employee IDs issued by the federal or state government, passports and college IDs.

1. Gee, this sounds like Pennsylvania has created a form Poll Tax for itself.

Saw a old, black woman - in her 90's I think saying this would be the first election that she would be ineligible to vote.

@ Pa.

BTW, how's that Sandusky investigation going for you Gov?

I was so shocked that anyone would be questioning this woman's right to vote - never had until the GOP began it's campaign to put PA into the "stealable" category.

I'm hoping that they are successful and can shut this thing down. I'm also hoping, that in other states where this is occurring, people will fight it off.

Never thought I'd see the day where citizens would need to revisit the dirty past and fight for their rights.

2. We know what "Voter ID" laws are REALLY about.

And now Pennsylvania officials admit that voter fraud, which that state's new "Voter ID" law was supposed to combat, hasn't ACTUALLY been documented:

It's disturbing that any one would want to limit another person's right to vote.

It's enraging when they pull these types of stunts so close to a General Election. Same with changing the how ballots are typed or changing the method of voting so close to a GE.

There should be an aggressive state wide information campaign to inform people of the changes, is there? I doubt it.

When your own governor hasn't a clue on the type of information required, there's something terribly wrong.

There's something seriously wrong with this country, PA is the biggest boil to pop up. It needs to be stopped.

7. I remember a few years back the GOP decided to fight the locations of some of the voting polls

This was in Philly and about 2 weeks before the election. They filed a complaint stating that churches should not be used for voting polls using the separation of church-state rule.

Thing is this - churches are use for voting for several reasons. They tend to have good parking and they are always handicap accessible. The people who run the churches (or synagogue) know they are not allowed to push any religion on the voters but I did recall one church did have a bakesale outside of the church. Can't complain about having tasty snacks to eat while voting.

Thing is this - they pulled this stunt right before the election and it was never about using the church but instead moving the voting locations in order to confuse voters and hopefully discourage some from voting. A judge ended up striking denying it.

So when it comes to voting, separation of church and state is very important but when We, The People fight against the Xian influence in our democracy - whole other ballgame.

Amazing.

How could he be expected to know pesky things like actual LAWS THAT HE PUSHED THROUGH?

Sometimes you just forget the talking points handed to you by ALEC, I guess.

5. Ran into this getting my son his DMV ID.....

We had his US passport, birth certificate, his latest bank statement, I had utility bills and a driver's license and we STILL had to go back to the bank and retrieve his actual SS card from our safety deposit box before they would give him an ID.

One good thing: it seems to have motivated my son to get more political.

11. I just renewed my MN Driving License this week.

No paperwork required other than the old license. You have to provide your SS#, and the clerk runs a computer check to make sure it matches your name. A quick eye test, a check for $36, and you're outa there. I did not have to show anything other than that when I moved here in 2004, either, and got my first MN licence. Just my CADL and a written test. It seems different states are requiring different documentation.

Oh, yeah, we don't have to renew at a DMV office, either. The city hall over in the neighboring suburb does it, as do most city halls in MN. Friendly people, no crowds, and you're done in five minutes. They handle all the car registration, title transfers, and other stuff, too.

I like Minnesota.

12. It's sad that there are 4 Constitutional Amendments relating to voting

as well as various laws, yet this sort of thing continues to happen. This should tell you something about this country.

15th Amendment- The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.

19th Amendment - The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

24th Amendment - The right of citizens of the United States to vote in any primary or other election for President or Vice President, for electors for President or Vice President, or for Senator or Representative in Congress, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state by reason of failure to pay any poll tax or other tax.

26th Amendment - The right of citizens of the United States, who are 18 years of age or older, to vote, shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of age.
