Actual tweet from the President of the U.S.
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, dont trade anymore-we win big. Its easy!

(6,034 posts)Everyone here was anti trade anti TPP.
And now all of a sudden when Trump takes these actions we realize ceding global leadership was a terrible idea.
For the record I am admitting I was wrong.

(17,862 posts)Trade policy is a complex subject that needs to be approached carefully - consulting with many different individuals while having specific goals to accomplish in mind.
It is not suitable for ad hoc decisions of this magnitude.

(85,996 posts)...and most of the opposition to the TPP was because of the anti-democratic provisions which effectively exempted corporations from accountability.
Also, there was the issue of 'fast track' which prevented Democratic legislators from even reading the bill, much less amending it, before setting it on a course to certain passage.

(6,399 posts)You have to factor some of that into the opposition to it as part of a larger wedge to create among Democrats.

Have you noticed how many of the worst Obama-haters, who were also TPP-haters, are now gone? A bunch of them self-deported, and others were escorted to the exit when they couldn't adapt to the new DU rules after HRC got the nomination.
As for the TPP, after all of Obama's hard work to bring it about, other countries have moved on without America. Rather like the global Climate Change accords -- other countries are moving on without America. China is attempting to fill the vacuum left by our departure -- MAGA.

(65,010 posts)BKO, BKO, valuation of the company dropped 2x in three years, but still thinks he's a winner. So, he thinks that a negative trade balance is losing, when it depends on all the other aspects of the relationship and the economy.
The negative net imports are subtracted from the nominal GDP, and yet we still have the largest, most dynamic and most productive economy in the world.
Somehow that doesn't seem like losing. Could it be better? Sure in many ways. (For instance, real dollar wage increases for about 150 million americans). But, it definietly ain't losing. Except to someone who knows nothing about anything.
