Operating other than the NRA ? If not maybe one could be started by the large group of gun owners who support sane and safe regulations . Something like the NRA used to be. I have to believe there are more intelligent gun owners out there than those who have to parade around with rifles strapped on them and a pistol on hip.

(19,429 posts)Founded in 1887 by Theodore Roosevelt and George Bird Grinnell, this is the oldest wildlife conservation organization in North America. It was the initiator of the first National Parks, including Yellowstone, Glacier, Denali and Grand Canyon. It was also the initiator of the first legislation for wildlife, including the Timberland Reserve Bill, Yellowstone Protection Act, Lacey Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Alaskan Game Laws. It was the champion of the earliest science-based wildlife management efforts and legislation, including the National Wildlife Refuge System Act, and the creation of the Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Units; the first legislations funding wildlife conservation, including the Wildlife Restoration Act (Pittman-Robertson), and the Federal Duck Stamp Act; and it pioneered and established the principles of responsible, ethical, and sustainable use hunting known as Fair Chase.

(49,445 posts)...and there is a very large overlap between people that do shooting sports, people that hunt, and people that practice armed self-defense, so any group that doesn't include self-defense probably won't be very popular.
We're still debating "sane and safe regulations", as a nation, at least, even if the prevalent definition here on DU is "anything that helps remove guns from private ownership and pisses off gun owners/fetishists/humpers/ammosexuals".
There are other groups, but the NRA is predominate and established. State that require pistol permits often mandate a pistol safety course, which are usually from an NRA-certified instructor. Belonging to a shooting club often requires NRA membership as well.
There are actually 2 NRA groups, the activist section called the NRA-ILA, and then the "regular" NRA. The NRA-ILA does all the lobbying and PR and stuff.
