But I always regarded being heroic as also embodying being altruistic. That you don't see any gain for yourself.

I guess you could say an inadvertent hero, in both cases.

But the word 'hero' has lost its meaning through overuse. For instance, it seems like every military person, every policeman and firefighter are deemed a 'hero' just for signing up and doing their job where they take home a paycheck. Dangerous work maybe, but so is oil rig work, or warzone journalism, high rise construction, or teaching inner city schools. All of which contribute to the security of the country in a broader sense, economically or freedom of information.
