Microsoft co-founder and global philanthropist Bill Gates plans to meet with President Donald Trump on Thursday afternoon in the oval office.
The meeting will be closed to the press, but Gates said Thursday morning that he plans to convince the "America-first" president that foreign aid spending benefits Americans.
"I dont agree with the American-first rhetoric," Gates said an interview with Politico. "The alliances that weve built over time and the help weve provided to countries uplifting them
have made the world a more stable, a richer place."
Foreign aid benefits Americans by preventing diseases outbreaks and stabilizing foreign countries without using military resources.
"Americans don't want pandemics and they don't want to send soldiers off to provide stability in Africa," Gates said.
The U.S. spends 20 times more on defense than foreign aid $600 billion versus $30 billion while many European countries' ratio spends only two to three times more on defense, Gates said.
