Pennridge students got detention for gun walk out tweet must see!

?s=21

46 of the #Pennridge225 served the first Saturday morning detention today. Pennridge students wore Parkland victims' names and sat, arms linked, for the whole dentention. A modern sit in.

They turned detention into another demonstration. These kids are damn heroes.

got the message. You do not smother legitimate protest.

If you doubt the end results, well, remember what happened to LBJ and Richard Nixon. My guess is,these same Adminstrator's are Sons and Daughters of those who were in those protests.

They let us protest at school, but if we skipped class that was a no-no. We participated in sit-ins, as long as was we weren't skipping class it was fine.

I remember one teacher came up to me with a class schedule in hand.

I was busted.

We mostly protested dress codes (girls still were not allowed to wear pants) but restrictions to school grounds during lunch, teachers hitting students and bad cafeteria food were also on the list. We regularly missed classes for this And we never received detention or punishment.

My, how times have changed.

I didn't mind detention, but my parents were super strict!

If they caught you smoking in the bathroom, you got detention, but they didn't call parents.

I think we had sit ins for too much homework, strict teachers, and wanting an indoor smoking area. We also had sit ins just to hangout in the halls, sing our favorite songs and listen to our transistor radios. (We were such patriots - LOL)

Superintendent and Board came out with a quite supportive policy the days before. I had a test scheduled; most came back to class and had enough time to finish. The rest will finish in morning tutorial and after school this week. I am so encouraged by the student response, and proud and honored to be their teacher.

Lots of Mennonites in my class too (mid-70s) and some of the girls still wore the head covering. Haven’t seen that in quite a while. At least one of the big Mennonite churches up here is now non-denominational.

No German-American Bunds here that I know of (I live 15 min. north of there). Historically this was a very German area, settled before the Revolution. German was spoken in the home and many churches at least through the 1920s. Growing up in the area it was 99% white, now slowly getting more diverse.

I was hesitant to post the link because it's unfair to stereotype people, but tradition lingers for generations. I was thinking the school admins would be rather authoritarian types based on that. You know far more about it than I do.
