The Post Office would have to lay off folks.

7. "Unlike others, they pay little or no taxes," Just like ME, #45, and "that makes me smart."

Make up your mind, you useless fake-tanned blob of quivering protoplasm.

https://www.cnbc.com/2016/09/26/trump-brags-about-not-paying-taxes-that-makes-me-smart.html
CNBC Dan Mangan Mon, 26 Sept 2016
Donald Trump said he's "smart" by not paying income taxes and argued that if he did, the money would be "squandered."

Trump's jaw-dropping statements came after Hillary Clinton launched a fiery attack on the Republican presidential nominee for breaking a four-decade tradition of White House aspirants releasing their federal income tax returns.

"The only years that anybody's ever seen were a couple of years when he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license, and they showed he didn't pay any federal income tax," Clinton said. Trump quickly retorted: "That makes me smart."

Later, when Clinton told Trump was that "maybe ... you haven't paid any federal income tax for a lot of years," the real estate mogul, who claims to be worth up to $10 billion, said that he was a better steward for his money than the government.

"It would be squandered, too, believe me," Trump said.

I have mixed feelings about Amazon, but, having been in the shipping industry for almost 40 years, the one thing I can say without reservation is that they are very good for our business sector. As to the comments of the orange anus, the Amazon/USPS partnership is driving the rest of the industry. Those of us who work for competing carriers are having to conform to their arrangements just to keep pace. As usual, the orange anus knows fuck-all. If he wants to go after Bezos because WaPo treats him so badly, he's going to have to do better than this...

41. Court cases & the Commerce Clause require sales taxes be collected if the retailer has a presence

However bills were introduced but nothing has passed yet with respect to collecting taxes if there is NO presence, and a number of states have sued to require payment of state taxes regardless of where the online retailer resides.

So because of this, the SCOTUS plans to look at a case that would allow states to collect those taxes regardless of presence. I expect we will hear the result in the next couple months.

20. Shipping via USPS makes perfect business sense

for both parties. The Post Office makes door-to-door deliveries every day and now they do some Sunday deliveries, too. Why would any business that depends on door-to-door delivery set up its own duplicate service? Using USPS for pick up and deliver just makes way more sense.

It helps USPS, too, because shippers deliver pre-sorted packages to them.

Of course, USPS cannot take any individual package over 75lbs. Those have to go by commercial carrier.

23. Actually, it's FedEx & UPS who socialize final segment costs to the USPS while privatizing profits.

.

The USPS has the infrastructure to perform the most expensive part of package delivery--final segment delivery.

It is where they take the package form the regional distribution center and deliver it to the recipient.

While FedEx and UPS run delivery trucks in high-density areas, they rely on the USPS to perform most rural and suburban deliveries. Expedited packaging and other special delivery services are performed with their trucks. THat is why you will often see packages, shipped by FedEx or UPS delivered in your mailbox or by your letter carrier.

This is the most expensive part, and the USPS only makes $0.01 profit per package.

Over the years, these two carriers have lobbied congress to hobble the USPS so they would not be as competitive to their bread and butter services -- overnight and expedited deliveries. However, they want them viable enough to offload the expensive final segment needs. That is, until enough money is placed into the USPS retirement fund, then it will be sold to Bain Capital and raided--leaving taxpayers on the hook to replenish those billions.

.

24. So is this a distraction from Stormy or Mueller?

Amazon has been fantastic for the postal service who gets money from shipping their packages.

People also blamed email for stealing business from the postal service. Maybe Trump will ban Twitter for stealing jobs from other communication channels like newspapers.

Don't worry, he'll go back to blaming immigrants and minorities soon enough.

And complaining about negotiating lower costs isn't exactly valid.

We don't complain about buying "X" for $xxx from a store when the store buys "X" for $yyy
If you buy a thousand of something you are gonna expect a discount.

Heck, if I sell something on eBay and use USPS flat rate shipping, I get a discount if I purchase and print the shipping label online rather than go to the Post Office to purchase the shipping label.

46. Sure we do.

We complain about Walmart's price negotiating tactics and how it harms small businesses. We complain about the wide range of drug prices which depend on the negotiations of your insurance company (or in some cases, their lack of negotiations).

When Amazon get's lower costs for shipping than smaller businesses, it gives them an unfair business advantage. And someone has to make up the cost of that discount. That would be you and me.

47. And this is still not the complaint of the person I originally replied to. And yes...

we do complain of your examples. After a (admittedly, very quick and non-exhaustive) search, I found this ( https://www.vox.com/2017/12/29/16830128/amazon-trump-twitter-postal-service-feud ) from vox.com. It gives a more nuanced view, pointing out that some of the discount comes from insuring proper labelling, boxing, sorting etc.
Kinda the same discount any business gets for pre-sorting their mail (think bulk mail).

It also points out that USPS's "package department" is the arm of the USPS that is actually making money, and the "first class delivery" arm is what is in trouble.

It also points out some of the issues you reference.

Dear President Spanky,

It is considered poor form in the business world to upset your customers. It makes them go away and then you lose business. If you really want to offend a customer of yours, you should first see how much business that customer does with you. Then you can decide if it is worth it to offend and lose that customer.
