When I was a kid, MANY years ago, the Ritz movie theater in my little home town ran "monster movies" at least once a month on Friday nights and every kid between 7 and 12 who could scratch up a quarter for admission hiked "up town" to get the bejeezus scared out of 'em. We'd sit up front, of course, and watch the likes of the original Godzilla, Rodan and the terrifying Frankenstein 1970.
We'd get so into the "Oh, my God this is scary" routine that we declared that "no one" could possibly bear to view the entire screen, the entire monster at once. And, so, we'd take off our coats, put them over our heads and look through a sleeve held out towards the screen. In this way, we'd see Godzilla's tail, but no more. Or, his claws, but no more. Or, his TEETH, but----you get the picture.
The total picture was clearly there for us to see, but we opted to take in just the small part of it that we could handle.
Today, we face a different monster. But, the totality of his ignorance, arrogance, misogyny, racism, greed, hypocrisy, mendacity and selfish mean-spiritedness is so bad, so disgusting, so surreal that we just don't really want to take it all in. We'd rather look through our coat sleeves and deal with JUST his ignorance or JUST his racism or---you get the picture.
But, we are not children any more. We have to look at how horrible this movie is and understand that we can't walk out. We have to stop the movie. Whatever it takes.
Take your coat off your head and tell me I'm wrong.
