Excellent take on the Roseanne reboot

This perfectly expresses my feelings about the show.

The ‘Roseanne’ Reboot Is Funny. I’m Not Going to Keep Watching.

By Roxanne Gay
New York Times
March 30, 2018

https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/03/29/opinion/roseanne-reboot-trump.html#click=https://t.co/8AC4TPPglB

“Roseanne” reboot, I thought again about accountability. I laughed, yes, and enjoyed seeing the Conner family back on my screen. My first reaction was that the show was excellent. But I could not set aside what I know of Roseanne Barr and how toxic and dangerous her current public persona is. I could not overlook how the Conner family came together to support Mark as he was bullied at school for his gender presentation, after voting for a president who actively works against the transgender community. They voted for a president who doesn’t think the black life of their granddaughter matters. They act as if love can protect the most vulnerable members of their family from the repercussions of their political choices. It cannot.

This fictional family, and the show’s very real creator, are further normalizing Trump and his warped, harmful political ideologies. There are times when we can consume problematic pop culture, but this is not one of those times. I saw the first two episodes of the “Roseanne” reboot, but that’s all I am going to watch. It’s a small line to draw, but it’s a start.

1. Why dont they show the gender fluid kid getting kicked out to live on the streets?

As happens too often? Living from day to Day selling his ass on the streets? Or the passive aggressive racist jokes that your Average white American thinks is funny, even when directed to an in-law of color?

I keep saying I don’t watch TV too much, so the show is only on my radar because of its popularity, but there is another, personal thing. These are my people, uneducated white, racist working class people. I know them very well. They show will not present anything close to the reality of it, it’s a another white-flight refuge into a fantasy world, where you can still love your racist Nana without calling her out on her shit because “she grew up in that time and she’s not got to change”

Yeah, I get change is hard, and being anti-racist is work, but I have no pity for this kind of soft pedal. I know the backstory, I know the real consequences of a bigoted life, where you enclave yourself with like-minded people in bitterness and vote for Donald fucking Trump because he will let you say and feel whatever the fuck you want without self examination.

2. And why make the only black woman in their lives invisible and silent?

Could it be that even Roseanne knows she can't get away with her crap in the presence of a grown-assed black woman - she'd get eaten her alive.

So much better to prove she's so not racist by parading around a completely dependent 5-year-old black kid who hasn't yet formed any political opinions and certainly won't challenge any of Roseanne's.

It will be thoroughly orchestrated, and she’ll probably get redeployed. Or maybe they won’t even bother, just having her killed during her deployment. The same balm to the white bigots soul.

is just fine under Trump...LGBTQ,Black, Handicpped and Latina (or any immigrants)-also women ...no worries. We can all get along just fine with Trump as president...and it is lie from bowels of hell. Trump is dangerous and must not be normalized. I hope he will be gone soon.

6. Its not just "normalizing Trump", its normalizing all his racist, sexist, bigoted,

homophobic, chauvinistic, anti-education, science denying, knuckle dragging fans. Roseanne Barr is the poster child for haters. Her own history of bullying, crude and lewd behaviors only serves to encourage the troglodytes who live in the dank underworld of Trump Nation to rip apart the norms of a modern society that rejects their divisive ideas.

What I find most offensive is that the show pretends that voting for Trump wasn't a vote to affect the world in a way that very negatively affects transgender people and POC. The pretense that the average blue collar family is fine with black in-laws and gender non-conformists. Total fking apologist bullshit.

As I find out who her sponsors are I will contact them and let em know I don't buy from companies that finance hateful artists' endevors.

9. I will wait awhile until I pass judgement,

although I'm not sure how much I will watch. I would not put it past Roseanne the person to have a little something up her sleeve here that will not make Trump look so good. Yes, I know she supports him in real life. Or at least she gives that appearance. She is an actor, and that profession is about fooling people into thinking you are someone you are not. Remember Reagan acted his way through two scripted terms as president.

One thing I noticed is that some of the acting by the younger actors was horrible. To be fair, though, since the show has been off the air many of them have not really had acting careers and may be just a little rusty. Time will tell.

23. I rarely let an entertainer's politics influence whether I support their performances

The art and the politics are usually two different things for me.

But there are exceptions where I draw the line. Bigotry, hate, cruelty, depravity are among them.

That's why I don't go to Woody Allen movies. He's a twofer - an unrepentant pedophile and a bigot who makes films that never include any who is not white, which really takes some doing since most of his films take place in NYC.

I don't buy or listen to R. Kelly because he, too, is a pedophile who exploits and harms girls and young women. He disgusts me as a human being on a very basic level and I will not contribute a nickel to support his art and livelihood.

Roseanne is in that category. She's a hate mongering, vile-spewing racist. If she were just an actress who appeared in a film or television show, perhaps I'd watch her (but probably not, since I find her one-note screeching "everywoman" schtick really annoying). But her show is not just entertainment that she's participating in. The show is centered around her, not as an actress, but as a person and the show is a message, again, all about her. The show and the star are completely inseparable, so her stench is smeared all over it.

And I'm not going to let any of it get on me, so I'm staying far away from it.

37. From what I gather, Roseanne is a bit of a narcissist

I have family who worked with her either on the original run of this series or something else, and they said she was not a pleasant person to work with. Tie that in with all the things everyone else says about her, I'm pretty sure many of the stories about her are true. Maybe that narcissism and brash offensiveness they both share is why she has an affinity for Trump. It could all be an elaborate ruse too, but that would require a lot of dedication.

I watched both episodes and I found them funny. I doubt I'll continue watching them, but it has more to do with me being very picky with what TV shows I waste my time with and less to do with her politics. I do hope conservatives keep watching it, though. Mostly because they seem open and accepting of the show, and despite the superficial twitteresque one liners like snowflake and whatnot, I think the show did promote many progressive ideals like the original did. For example, the acceptance and explanation of the non-binary grandson. The son's daughter is either black or bi-racial (wasn't covered in detail yet) and they also talked about how it's a woman's right to choose what she does with her body. Unless she goes totally off the rails with this, then it might be a good way to get conservatives to reflect on their own thoughts in a more nuanced manner than they are used to.

I guess we'll see how it goes. I'm actually surprised so many conservatives are giving the show raving reviews given the topics they did cover. I guess calling liberals snowflakes is all they need. Which makes sense, as we've seen them willing to totally abandon their supposedly deeply held convictions when it comes to their support of Trump.

10. This one hurts, because I so loved the original show and its namesake

But Donald J. Trump is an existential threat to our Constitution and to the safety and security of Planet Earth. The fact that due process moves at a snail's pace, that we live in the rule of law, and in the meantime this gross thief of an election continues to pretend to hold the presidency, doesn't in any way validate it. I refuse to watch a sitcom that makes light of the situation, or softens its damage with comedy.

I think a lot of Roseanne's audience is nostalgic and wanted the Conner family back on their TV screens. But this show will run out of gas, because her former core audience will abandon her and her newfound MAGAT allies won't be able to suffer the counterpunch offered by her cohorts.

I've always found her annoying and, somehow, just phony. Proud to say, I have not, and will not watch her "new" show. Her original stand-up was different, original and, usually, funny. I couldn't get into her first show because her attitude just turned me off; perhaps because, as a teacher, she seemed to me like those anti-education parents who were so hard to deal with in a gracious way. As that show went on, she did tone that attitude down considerably.

21. Great critique from the NYT

although the underlying mechanism is chiefly ignored in its content. Every decision involving major corporate entertainment entities is about money. It rules all.

It's highly apparent ABC made a cynical decision to exploit a niche of Trump supporters who would rush like lemmings to this material due to their persecution complex. Crazy-ass, bigotry-laced, conspiracy-addled Roseanne Barr proved the perfect vehicle for their purposes.

The questions about why the other actors signed on, those whose voiced personal opinions seemingly run counter to an administration warming up to white separatism and authoritarianism is a good one. Why indeed?

Those who played the Connor kids aren't exactly rolling in dough these days. Sarah Gilbert is the one who remains most active.

Goodman and Metcalf are more notable cyphers. They are both still working with regularity, Goodman most of all. Perhaps they feel the press of age and financial security feels more tenuous than ever with the specter of illness more prominent.

Maybe their longtime gratitude to Barr loomed large. Maybe ABC and the production company just met their price for swallowing pride. Maybe their convictions weren't all that deep.

Or maybe they were never as bright as we wished.

Whatever it is, in the long run it won't matter to me anyway. It's very, very rare sitcoms entertain me and Barr's initial run failed to captivate my interest. I don't expect that to suddenly change.

And I knew about Metcalf daughter playing the younger version. Apparently, ABC claims that she won the audition on her own and it had nothing to do with being Laurie's daughter. She does an extremely good job, so I believe it.

However, I'm not overly fond of the show. I don't know why, it's not bad, I think I just don't care for pre-quels.

Jerry O'Connell will be playing George Cooper, Jr. on The Big Bang Theory at Sheldon's wedding at the end of the season.

I knew Metcalf has done some periodic film and stage work but the only other thing I've seen her in was HBO's "Getting On." If she's been spending her time on standard network television series then it's beyond my radar. I'd rather be reading.

Goodman, on the other hand, has done plenty of film work which I notice more. The only TV series I've noted him in over the last decade or so was HBO's "Treme" and that was only for the first season.

93. As I said, "periodic film"

IMDB shows her to have worked in five films (two of which are still in pre-production) and 14 TV projects in the last decade.

Why didn't you insist on including Goodman's meager stage work as well?

50. Metcalf is an Actress

I have always liked her. But even she voted for Jill Stein on the show..

Jill Stein was seen in that picture with Putin. I think she was paid to run as a spoiler for Trump.

There is no semblance of fairness on the show.

But I did not watch , just saw clips because I have grown to dislike Roseanne over the years. Not my type to admire.

"It is very, very rare sitcoms entertain me". I just don't watch them. I am sure some of them are decent, but when you haven't watched any in a long time and then you go back and try to watch one, they all seem pretty dull and idiotic.

My television is a movie player, that's all it does. DVDs and Netflix.

No cable, no satellite, no broadcast.

Trump would be nobody without television. Rosanne is the least of our troubles.

And according to the wikipedia page she tried for the nomination for 2012 green party, but lost to Stein. There seems to have been various conflicts during the time she was involved with the green party. Almost makes me wonder if her Trump support isn't all out of spite. She doesn't seem to get along with anyone.

62. Holllywood has in the past intentionally slow walked the American public to an epiphany

The show I would be willing to watch in the future is to observe HOW Roseanne eventually accepts the eviction of the orange traitor from the White House.

Because part of red America might take their cues and rationalizations from that.

34. I liked the original version of Roseanne

I still watch the reruns. At the time I knew people that found her insulting. Yes at times she was insulting. I think presenting the political divisions on TV is a good idea. I must say I have not yet watched the new version. But I will say all the points presented above are good arguments. We should not normalize racism and bigotry. So I assume that is what this show does. I always think it is a good idea to look at your faults and get to the point where you can laugh at them. Maybe we need to try to understand how we got here. We always need to take a long look at ourselves, it sounds like that is not what this is doing. I think I will have to watch it, but I do not know now where I can see it at. I like to watch Rachel at 8:00 pm central time here. I will have to look it up and see what time it comes on. I think we need to reach these people somehow, but I do not know how. My Trump lover friends and relatives avoid me altogether. There is absolutely no discussions.

it was a lost opportunity because those who are deplorables self identified and it was more than half. Secretary Clinton listed specific traits so the pride they took in being those things should have been pointed out. Instead weak tea apologies were trotted out and the narrative that she called all donald supporters deplorable was allowed to stand.

applied knows that HRC was talking specifically about the white nationalists and extremists who had openly alligned themselves with Trump - not all the working schmucks who voted for him. It was the RW propagandists who took her words and twisted the meaning, as they often do, for their own purposes. Sad to see people here going alongwith the RW and accepting the propaganda as truth.

53. What's funny to me...

So I'm a sucker for a sitcom and a throwback reboot, but this one is a bridge too far for me.

What's funny to me is the lengths that people, even on this site, will go to justify the fact that they are watching or like this show. Yes, Goodman is an amazing actor, one of my favorites. Yes, there are some stellar supporting actors/actresses on the show. Yes the original sitcom did and incredible job of capturing average America in the 1990's. But none of that can hide the fact that Barr has taken her shock comic routine so far that she's a right wing nutter now!! Just yesterday she was posting on Twitter "Just wait till the next episode to see how I deal with these liberals". Does that entertain you? That's what I want to scream out every time I see apologists on here saying "Well did you watch it" or "I loved the original show and this one is funny too".

It's incredible how quickly we as a society will drop our convictions the moment that our personal likes or entertainment choices stand in conflict to what we supposedly espouse.

Unless something huge happens in the Trump Administration-namely, he leaves by force. (I'm not holding my breath.) I'd watch it to see how a show with a proud supporter would react to that news and if they could face being part of the mess.

Make that show in a few years and I'd watch it. I'd like to see the spin or if they can no longer spin it.

71. If her show is what it claims to be

Which is about a mixture in equal measure of liberalism and Trumpism in a multiracial blue collar family and both sides of the political divide are treated with equality of importance I would be willing to bet that the Deplorables will boycott it just as much as we will.

Actually our side is historically more apt to give it a chance for the simple reason that that’s what we do. At the very least we try to understand those who we disagree with.

The Trump deplorables have already made up their hivelike mind. They will believe that the show and Roseanne have betrayed them and/or they will think it’s a liberal sitcom backed by evil liberal billionaires trying to brainwash them.

If it has a liberal slant in any way they will turn on dear Roseanne and say she’s just a liberal tool.

On the night of the show's premiere, she posted a tweet calling Parkland survivor David Hogg a Nazi. She cannot control her vileness. She means every word she says, and trying to excuse her mocking Jackie? Quit excusing Barr's vileness.

ABC cleaned up her twitter, but the screenshots are alllll over, from stuff for years and years. Horrible stuff.

Shame on any of you watching this and supporting her -- she is WORSE than Ted Nugent, and Ted Nugent doesn't have a PT show a bunch of liberals are praising and watching.

and will watch a it in its entirety - or not at all. Or I might watch the good seasons, and skip the others ( havent and probably wont watch the last season of Sherlock having heard from many sources that it sucked. )

"Lost" is probably the last series I watched on TV and I wish to god I had back all that time I wasted watching the last two or three seasons!

Im willing to give even RW whackos a chance *IF* their work is artfully done. Sometimes films that present a point of view not your own can be actually quite illuminating.

I do recall the first two or three seasons of Roseanne as being really beautifully done, just the right balance of snark and heart. I think it started to go down hill a couple of yrs before the last with that Mom character and Tom Arnold and some of those others - I just stopped caring.... and watching.
