General Discussion

It tends to be unanimous that the media reports trump's antics and either act befuddled, surprised, or frustrated - and then behave as if this is some sort of video game they are watching, one that does not directly impact any of them.
This of course has been going on for over a year. Each story gets reported as if it is something new, or surprising - the consistent pattern is never really drawn. I realize that the media is "supposed" to be neutral - but when we have a destructive narcissist that was not legitimately elected to be president, when do they finally decide that enough is enough - that false equivalence isn't needed - that some things are simply wrong, or dangerous?
I think most of us here see what is going on - and we remember reading our history books about the rise of Hitler - we know about the rocky times our country went through - the blood that was spilled in all of the various movements through the years. We realize how quickly gains can be lost.
When is enough enough? Once again - and it is not the first time (or twentieth) I've said this here - where are those who care enough about our country - to rise up and stop this madness? Over a year since the stolen election - and I still have to pinch myself every day to remind myself this is real. That the asshole is actually the president. And check my phone in the AM to confirm that we are still here - that the cretin hasn't started something just because he can, or just because he wants attention?

(226 posts)Remember back to last Sat morning. NPR had to give time to the supposed "pro gun marches" organized by , well, the nra, and who knows really. On that day, they decided to give time to a Pro Gun march. So when I look to see anything about those marches..not there. Boycott NPR, complain to your local Public Radio.

Daily show did a bit on this with Roy Wood Jr. Maybe 75 people. funny, a joke, but not legit as a news story.

(60,014 posts)and your supportive comments. I am so thankful for DU, and for all of you - I don't know where else to air my utter consistent disbelief and outrage at this most peculiar and dangerous place that we find ourselves in!
My purging here allows me to go around and do my gardening talks having gotten all of the political stuff off my chest.

(32,701 posts)they'd have "both sides" on to argue for and against the rounding up of citizens into camps. At what point is enough enough? They only demand truth and honesty when it's them (TV networks) being attacked. For every other topic, it's all about the entertainment and $$$.

(25,854 posts)"Fresh Air" with Terry Gross and "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" are about it. I became disillusioned back in 1992 when people like Cokie Robers were totally dismissive of Bill Clinton in early 1992. It was obvious to me back then that the network had become increasingly conservative, and all those who complain about their left wing bias obviously haven't listened to them in nearly 30 years.
But there's another thing at issue, which is that journalism exists without context. Reporters only ever report on the story in front of them, without ever connecting it to anything else, least of all to what's happened before, and never to anything outside the narrow confines of that story. And that's a huge problem.
Oh, and for what it's worth I wake up every morning to Amy Goodman's "Democracy Now". I also listen to the BBC sometimes. I read the local newspaper. And I read books. Lots of books.
Back in the mid-70's, in an earlier period without TV (I am without TV either over the air or cable/satellite, although I watch plenty of TV via the internet) a co-worker was genuinely concerned that I was not going to have any clue as to what was going on in the world. So he'd quiz me on current events, and was invariably astonished when I usually knew what was going on. And totally flabbergasted when I could fill in a bunch of background stuff because I read books. Lots of non fiction.
But back to my essential point. Most journalism is completely contextless. There is never any attempt to connect a given story to something that happened before. No larger picture. It allows most people to just skim the surface of what is really going on. Which is too bad, because context matters.
