The 2nd amendment was created to oppress blacks, minorities, and the LGBT community.
It blows my mind that such a backward, archaic right still exists.
No one needs a gun except the police and military.
This Easter I am weeping against such an awful "right."
A "right" that gives citizens the ability to kill.
Despicable.

(116 posts)Why does anyone need a killing machine in modern-day society?
The only exception I could grant is for farmer's who can have a registered shotgun with limited ammo. And the shotgun must be stored i in a safe and locked up separately from the ammo.
How many more need to die?

Founding Fathers had no problem with black people or gays because they were all either slaves or illegal.

The three-fifths compromise and the arming of slave patrols is all tied together.
Slave patrols were, deployed by white slave owners, were mostly blue-collar whites armed and organized to catch runaway slaves. The patrols evolved into police departments. The LBGT part of the OP could be called a stretch.

(39,171 posts)There are certainly no contemporary accounts from when the BOR was being debated that support him.
The British Bill of Rights from 1690 is the model for our BOR - it mentions a right to bear arms so it was a right they were very familiar with.

(39,171 posts)Btw, you do understand that the 3/5s compromise was a defeat for the slave states? They wanted slaves to count the same as free people.

(35,362 posts)But it's still not the case.
When the BOR was up for grabs, there was a very real issue taking place. They'd just fought a war and the militia was very real and very armed. Nobody lined up in DC when the treaty was signed with Britain for the DOD to collect all those firearms. And this made sure it wouldn't happen. The militia was not the slave patrols, and the militia was very much a living, viable entity at the time. So there was no confusion in the minds of anybody at the time with slave patrols.
All that this did was make sure the federal government didn't limit the states' militias. The states could. However, when the rights in the Constitution devolved to the individual states after the Civil War, this, too, trickled down. States couldn't have an state religion; and suddenly the Constitution limitations imposed on the federal government applied to the states, too.
No, slaves at the time weren't allowed to own firearms. Neither were they really accorded freedom of assembly, the right to petition the government, or freedom of speech.

(30,771 posts)and we own guns. Most farmers do. My husband does not really hunt any more, but he used to do that.
I haven't fired a gun in years, but I pass my state's background checks to be a gun owner.
I am not going to apologize for that.
Do we need reform? Of course.

(116 posts)With ammo regulations and must be locked up in a safe separate from ammo.
There is no other reason anyone else needs a gun.
The rest of the modern-world has strict gun control and have nowhere near the gun death rates as the United States.

(18,792 posts)Are all gun owners therefore racist?
" only the police and military..." are these the same police that people we're taking a knee to protest and support BLM last year or are these different police?
Should citizens be prohibited from killing and face legal consequences in all situations?

(2,050 posts)I bought weapons to hunt with, I gave up hunting over twenty years ago.
I couldn't kill another beautiful animal even though I only hunted for food not trophy's.
How on earth do you equate my gun ownership with the wish to harm other human beings when I will never shoot and kill another animal?.
Don't answer that, because you can't.
Bullcrap is cheap, the truth isn't.
Btw I won't be back to look at your reply, you stated your position, I stated the truth.
Better luck next time.
