Wow. I just found out EXACTLY why the Madman recently pardoned Scooter Libby.

After the Valerie Plame affair broke in 2003, Attorney General John Ashcroft recused himself from the DOJ investigation. The Deputy Attorney General under Ashcroft then promptly appointed a Special Prosecutor, Patrick Fitzgerald, to conduct the investigation. Ultimately, Scooter Libby was the only individual criminally charged and convicted in the investigation, with George W. Bush ultimately commuting (but not pardoning) the sentence imposed against Libby.

And who was the Deputy Attorney General at that time who appointed Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald?

None other than James Comey.

So the seemingly random act of the Madman pardoning Libby out of the blue this past weekend suddenly makes perfect sense.

It was:

1. A huge f-you towards Comey, whose book was about to be released and who was about to launch a media tour surrounding the book. Much like how Trump wants to destroy all of President Obama's accomplishments, he views Libby's conviction as an accomplishment of Comey's, so out of spite he seeks to erase it.

And.....

2. A demonstration of contempt by Trump for the Special Prosecutor's role in investigating potential crimes in the Executive Branch.

Came across that while reading a portion of Comey's book this afternoon and it suddenly dawned on me.

up from nothing. If the whole GOP Congress was on fire, I wouldn't use my spit on them to put it out. I want them all gone in November. So don't "f" this up Dems with a bunch of bullshit infighting. If we don't get this right under these circumstances, we don't deserve, and won't get a chance to lead this country as the majority party.

with lots of great context for tying in the hideous levels of DOJ weaponization potential and rightwing "thinking".
Notice the clear line of sight from Cheney to the POS POTUS, and old characters from the past.
Have we forgotten some of the old beasts, for example, Robert Novak?

In an Oval Office meeting, Cheney tried once more to persuade the president. According to Time, he argued Libby was a loyal team player who had been made into a political fall guy. Fred F. Fielding, the White House counsel, argued against the pardon. Bush eventually sided with Fielding.

Only months after leaving the White House, Cheney expressed his frustration with Bush’s decision. “I was clearly not happy that we, in effect, left Scooter sort of hanging in the wind, which I didn’t think was appropriate,” he told CNN.

Other Bush loyalists also expressed their frustration — including a number who are now in Trump’s orbit.

“Somebody’s going to have to ask President Bush why he went out of his way to say he respected the jury’s verdict,” John R. Bolton, Bush’s U.N. ambassador and Trump’s new national security adviser, said at the time. “If you think it was a miscarriage of justice, then you think it shouldn’t have gone to a jury to begin with.”

Alan Dershowitz, a vocal Trump defender on cable television, also pushed Libby’s appellate cause, calling his appeals “serious and substantial” and filing a brief in 2007 asking for Libby to be granted bail pending his appeal.

Victoria Toensing and Joe diGenova, the husband-and-wife attorney team Trump considered hiring earlier this year, are also vocal Libby backers.

When Libby got his law license back in 2016, diGenova told the Daily Caller: “Comey and Fitzgerald tried to frame Scooter Libby, and they did, but then they didn’t get it done. And then of course that idiot George W. Bush didn’t give him a pardon.

(c) 2018 David Cay Johnston

...Over many years and in many forums Trump has laid out his life philosophy in some detail. And his behavior is consistent with his stated views on life.

Trump himself has reduced his life philosophy to a single word—revenge.

“I love getting even,” Trump advised in one of his books, adding “go for the jugular, attack them in spades!” Repeatedly he has said in talks and in his books that destroying the lives of people he considers disloyal gives him pleasure. That Trump does not recognize ethical limits on conduct, the propriety George Washington modeled, derives from his fundamental character, narcissism. But unlike the mythic figure who came to a tragic end drowning in the pool that mirrored his visage, Trump’s narcissism has so far helped him get to where he has for decades said he belonged—in the White House.

Over many years in paid public appearances and in books bearing his name on the cover, Trump rejected the idea of turning the other cheek, saying that those who do are “fools” and “idiots.” This philosophy was ignored by the many pastors who endorsed Trump and accepted his statement that he is a Christian. That is worth pondering because revenge is explicitly rejected by Jesus and runs counter to the whole theme of the New Testament. The Golden Rule has no place in the life of Donald Trump. Revenge is the philosophy of dictators and mob bosses everywhere and always, used to keep others in line with threats of economic ruin, violence, or worse. That Trump by his silence gave tacit approval to what Omarosa said about Americans bowing down and that he then put her on the government payroll reinforces the facts showing that the Trump presidency is unlike anything that came before, a presidency built on open public contempt for Constitutional principles.

Everyone associated with Trump as an employee, associate, partner, or whatever - should take note. In the eyes of Donald Trump, loyalty is a one-way street. You must be loyal to him, but he has none towards you or anyone else.

a message to others who might flip, that a pardon is coming their way, if they keep their mouths shut and take one for the gipper (gipper meaning Trump, in this case).

The fact that Libby is connected to Comey and a special prosecutor is icing on the cake, for Trump.
