"ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – They’ve worked with arrestees for their entire careers, but now they’re trying to get on the other side of the bench.

Though Jerry Gonzales, Richard Pacheco and Jim Smith aren’t attorneys, the three claim they’ve seen enough accused criminals to oversee the courts.

The bail bonding business has dwindled since last July after the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled that judges are not allowed to issue excessive bonds. Gonzales said he was forced to close his Santa Fe bail bonding business last summer."
