My grandfather worked for Delco Remy in Indiana and was only getting 3-4 hours work each day. He told me they didn't have enough money to own a car, and they all had to walk to work..So he and others started the UAW, so they could have a 40 hour work week, and General Motors sent thugs down from Chicago and Detroit to try and have them killed...My father who is 90 years old voted for Obama twice and told me early on never to trust the Republicans. Look what we have right now!

(10,726 posts)More common back in the early 1900's was the 100 hour work week, which, combined with low wages, meant a person trying to raise a family had little option but to work all the time and hardly see that family.
I can say that I benefited from the reforms. I worked 35-40 hours a week when my kids were growing up, and it was really nice to be a part of their lives. Now they're grown and I work more like 60-70 hours a week, by choice, as its kind of a race to put enough away for retirement while I am still physically able.

(7,026 posts)I remember when they went on strike against the Tribune in Chicago . They sent in goons with German Shepards to run them out of the pressroom. They were on strike for years and finally settled approximately 12 years later.

(82 posts)That is because of our current education system. I noted the teacher walk out in several States and that is because the Republicans don't want Democrats to have an education. This is a system break down that people of this age are not realizing..The information is on the web, but they don't really care. It all goes back to that it didn't happen to them...YET

(16,206 posts)and members got their asses kicked by goons for a long time. They persevered.
My dad was a UAW member for 31 years. He retired the way you're supposed to and yes, he worked at his job.
I did some repair work for a man that organized coal miners. The goons broke his fingers so he couldn't write.
Organizing the riff raff scares the fuck outa the wealthy class, it really does.
