I’m a black gay man, and I’ve known Joy Reid since my days at MSNBC. She interviewed me for her book years ago and spoke to my students in one of my Columbia classes a year or two ago. She has always treated me with dignity and respect, and I respect and appreciate her as well.

However, Joy has already said: "I regret the way I addressed the complex issue of the closet and speculation on a person’s sexual orientation with a mocking tone and sarcasm. It was insensitive, tone deaf and dumb."

My exposure to black communities has shown me that criticism of difference is acceptable, that the issues with gay black brothers and sisters has been a long standing issue, but one that has generally been sorted out.

How I know is that I have gay black friends -- one is a professor, one a social worker -- whose wedding I attended. I've known them for a long time.

All I have to say is that white people better chill out, black people got this.

MSNBC had better know that it would be stupid to make Joy Reid resign from anything. And I will raise holy hell with MSNBC if they so much as hint at firing her.
