Meyers: Trump Wanted Me To Apologize On-Air for Making Fun of Him

Four years after the ‘Late Night’ host torched Trump at the WHCD, he says Michael Cohen was sent to negotiate Trump’s appearance on his show—with one big demand.

By EDWARD-ISAAC DOVERE May 08, 2018

NEW YORK—It wasn’t all porn star hush money: Michael Cohen once tried to negotiate an appearance by Donald Trump on Seth Meyers’ show, for what the “Late Night” host pitched as a fun way of coming together after torching Trump at the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner.

Meyers had invited Trump after running into him at the “Saturday Night Live” 40th anniversary special in February 2015, a few months before the real estate developer’s presidential campaign launched.

Trump, Meyers told me in an interview for POLITICO’s Off Message podcast, started out receptive to appearing on “Late Night,” but the conversation ended once Meyers refused a demand Cohen relayed that was non-negotiable to Trump: He wanted Meyers to go on air and publicly apologize for making fun of Trump at the dinner four years earlier.

Neither a White House spokesman nor Cohen responded when asked what happened.

Back then, Meyers never thought Trump would actually go through with a presidential campaign—“Trump has been saying he will run for president as a Republican, which is surprising, since I just assumed he was running as a joke,” Meyers famously joked at the Correspondents Dinner—and Meyers says he believed that “right up to the moment where [Trump] won.”

I find his deadpan, clueless execution hilarious. But, he was the writer for the Dennis Miller Show and Rosanne (both the original and current run), so I guess that makes sense.

Ron White I also find hilarious. Never heard him speak much about politics (in the left/right sense), but he's always been a supporter of LGBTQ causes and marijunana legalization, still I figured since he toured with Foxworthy/Engval/Cable Guy he probably was a bit on the conservative side.

I enjoyed Dennis Miller's shtick on SNL. But as a solo writer & performer, he's not as funny as he thinks he is, which is death for comedy.

There are only 24 people on the list and one of them is deceased. I watch a ton of comedy and I have only heard of 17 of them. I was not surprised to see 2 women, 22 men and no minorities. I wonder how many are actually trump supporters. I know Victoria Jackson is a total nutcase republican.

Is that he makes references to things like the Ottoman Empire and Greek mythology, while most of his target audience has never even cracked a book in their lives.

Instead of political commercials, prime time minutes of

And that was reportedly back in 2015, so now he's carried that grudge for 8 years over a fairly common comedy routine. How sick is that? It's not normal to be so thinskined, to take offence at every inconsequential little riff as if it was a personal slight.

Still are.

He can't remember what he did to screw someone in business, yesterday, or which country he wants to go to war with today, but he'll never forget a grudge.
